The chip memory is located from address $0 and up to whatever size it is. It is a separate piece of memory that all the custom chips have DMA access to, and always reside within the 24-bit lower address range. The display chip Denise(OCS/ECS) or Alice(AGA) continously reads from this memory by DMA to feed the display all the time. This is partly why it appears slow to access for the CPU. The CPU is also forbidden to cache this memory which makes it appear even slower.
The fast memory was named "fast" because there is no DMA access to this memory that the CPU has to wait for. On some Blizzard turbo cards this memory starts at address $68000000 and is therefore in the 32-bit space and separate from the chips memory address space.
The "AutoConfig" maps these memory chunks in exec at poweron/bootup and they are given priorities so that if an application asks for "any" memory, it will get fast memory if it exists and there is enough free._________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

Many thanks for your work on HDAudio driver and Mixer.
It's nice to be able to use Mixer again, it works well
(and it's nice that you share your work with non x1000-betatester )

No, but I don't mind poking around in my own brain.

thats nice and seems not so distant but... Why no mention on e5500 but only e6500 and T4240? _________________ Simone"Tuxedo"Monsignori, Perugia, ITALY. |

because in that section of the article thomas was talking about SMT (symmetric multi-threading), something the e6500 core architecture supports. the e5500 is not SMT-capable. he was merely talking about the increasing complexity of microprocessor architectures -- no need to read anything into it.

did you even read the article? i found it both encouraging and informative. _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C).
