A PPC Amiga netbook would be a great way to get people back to using the Amiga as it will provide the cheapest possible entry point. Here's hoping the price is 'right'.

If the machine is marketed well and looks good (which is essential) then you will pick up a lot of new users.

Now - what a shame no-one makes a standard tablet PC that runs PPC code...

@-Sam-

I read that the price was between $300 and $500 (subject to change). That is affordable for sure!

@kas1e

Way back in time when development of OS4 was announced, I remember reading that, if one's pockets were filled with enough money, one could ask Hyperion politely for a port to the hardware of one's choice. That included other CPU architectures as well. So, I don't know how easy a port could be made (probably not that easy) but I read it as 'every thing is possible'.

@-Sam-

I'd prefer 'sturdy' over 'looks'

@Amiga_3k

Sure it possible, it just will not have all the ppc-based software , and will need to add emulation of them (just like now with 68k on ppc, we will need ppc on any_cpu). That will be not easy for sure.

Anyway, as Rogue confirm that it ppc based, its all fine and good :)

It also limits the Googling to PPC based material, leaving out all the Intel / AMD / ARM / ... / options

Its obvious that the hardware is going to be from the company the manufactures the netbooks that known as limebooks in america. Seeing how long it has taken to program drivers for 460 and x1000 don't expect this in q1 or q2.

It is possible, but they doesn´t offer 12" version of their PowerPC netbooks (only 7" and 9").

@Hyperionmp

You say the DEVICE already exists and AmigaOS is already running on the DEVICE, but what exactly is the device and have you any specs?

@metalmac

Where does this story originate?

@1Mouse

You find the first info here:

http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic_id=33883&forum=16&start=220&viewmode=flat&order=0

"Mr Solie has just announced that it is soon going to be practical for me to join in the OS4 fun with a 12" netbook in Q1 1012 (at the ealiest) for only a few hundred US$ (hopefully)

known specs sound similar to the Limebook but with a bigger screen, could be more powerful but those specs would do me fine in a netbook it's hard to tell with all his laughing.

It's what i have been waiting for for a very long time, now I won't have to go with MorphOS on a big old powerbook or a SinclairUK spectrum laptop with Sinclair OS after all. hope it all comes to fruition.

It's the one thing that can bring people back to Amiga OS, well done fellers.

I should be in bed, its after 5am but for some reason i have stayed up for this but i'm glad i did now."

Then Rogue has comfirmed that he has one

@1Mouse

More details will follow once we are ready to reveal them and have consulted with all our partners.

This is in no way competitive to a desktop system like the AmigaOne 500 or AmigaOne X1000 as the performance points and expandabiliy of a netbook is completely different.

There is however a 3D chip onboard of the netbook.

Not Radeon. But hardware compositing is to be supported.

What's happening here?! It's too good to be true! I'll buy two, day one!

From Amigans.net:

Quote:
Details:

Price: $300 - $500 including OS4 license.
It's a specific AmigaOS product. PowerPC based.
Prototype has external VGA port.
Prototype can use external USB mouse and keyboard.
Delivered with OS4 preinstalled

@ Hyperionmp

What about calling this baby:

AmigaOne π

or

AmigaOne Journey Man

However, thank you so much for this great and unexpected development, hope this will help revitalize the Amiga market.

@ joeled

I think that when the JIT version of E-UAE for AmigaOS4.x will be completed it will be enough for some classic gaming

Cheers,
Shufflepuck

First of all, I am happy with the news!

Price (finally) looks more than welcomed and a netbook will most surely fill in the gap for many of us!

OTOH, I am somewhat skeptical.. Given the price/specs of 440/460/x1000, I am really afraid that this is gonna be an extremely underpowered machine (whoever has seen Efika in action can get my point). The MPC5121e will make even browsing a nightmare. I really - really hope for a not sub giga hertz cpu installed.

A "460like" specs but portable, will get my money for sure!
