| Why has no-one mentioned that the chosen PPC chip is (apparently) incompatible with the ones used by AmigaOS4 (and presumably MorphOS) : The FPU is 64-bit & it's instructions apparently overlap with those used for Altivec & other stuff.
Until I get some good answers, I am extremely skeptical about the whole thing. (Chances of OS4 running on it: Very low IMHO. Changes that it even exists: Uncertain but I'm guessing low.) _________________ Author of the PortablE programming language. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue... |

Where did they say which chip exactly they are using? I missed that part.
Ah, it's in the FAQ, not on the specs page. http://ultimateppc.nl/faq.php

Q: What PowerPC CPU are you using? A: The UltimatePPC uses the Freescale QoriQ P1013 e500v2 CPU. |

Apparently the board has made a public appearance.

Last saturday we had our Commodore GG meeting, and the UltimatePPC was shown "in the flesh". Both delevopers were in Maarssen and brought along Samo Jordan, original developer of the WarpOS/WarpUP! software. |

Regarding FPU:
Question:

BTW is Sam Jordan aware that the chosen CPU has an incompatible FPU? |
Answer:

Yes he is. I understand from him that in WarpOS there actually is some abstraction of the FPU code and that we can trap all FPU instructions. It is something we can work on to get this running. |

okay, even if i would prefer running 68k emu on whatever other incompatible cpu we can get hold of, especially if this was faster. warpos is already a niche within a niche and demands its native compiled binaries to take advantage of it. even if i own a csppc i hoped it rather to fade away..
alas it looks quite dull for os4 like that. Last edited by wawa on 19-Jun-2012 at 04:09 PM.

| Hmmm, I would have to get rid of my 060 and go back to an 040 which crashes but I would gain USB, Sata and up to date ethernet. PPC seems useless since no software is made for it. Quote:

Gideon Zweijtzer (of 1541-Ultimate fame) and Rutger Bevaart have teamed up to bring renewed innovation to the Classical Amiga by announcing the UltimatePPC today, the ultimate CPU expansion card for the Amiga 3000 & 4000. This new card will bring unparalleled performance and many great new features to the Amiga series of computers that were not available previously and give current users a viable upgrade path for aging components. It also opens new possibilities for newer versions of the Amiga Operating System or alternatives to run on your classic hardware with great performance. The UltimatePPC puts your Amiga right back on your desk as the most versatile and fun computer that has ever existed! Right now the UltimatePPC is in active development, we expect to be able to take pre-orders at the end of 2012. Please visit our project website at http://ultimateppc.nl for availability information, specifications and detailed status reports. Gideon & Rutger
I hope to every pagan deity in the universe that they can pull this off! |
