@kyle

I think that you would enjoy Wheezy with the LXDE desktop environment.
You install Wheezy using this installer
http://www.xenosoft.de/Debian_Wheezy_Sam4460ex_Netinstall-2.iso

Once you have installed Wheezy and loged in
Open a root terminal from the Accessories menu
Then add the LXDE desktop enviroment from the root terminal using
apt-get install lxde

To log in using LXDE select LXDE from the little box on the left a the bottom of the Debian login box.

You can then upgrade the installed kernel by downloading the following
http://www.xenosoft.de/Sam460ex-3.13.0.tar.gz
To install the updated kernel follow the steps below in Linux .

Extract the archive by right clicking on it in file manager and selecting Extract Here .
once extracted double click on the drawer named Sam460ex-3.13.0 to show the contents.
Open a root terminal from the Accessories Menu.
Type cp -r and a space
Drop and drag the drawer named lib from the file manager window into the root terminal window.
type /. and then the pressthe enter key.
Type cp -r and a space.
Drag and drop the drawer named boot from the file manager window into the root terminal window/
Type /. and then press the enter key.
once you reboot the new kernel will be used to boot linux.

I was meaning, which Linux for Sam460ex is faster? Lubuntu, Ubuntu, Wheezy?

The same instructions as above work for Sam440ep installation.
The ISO
http://www.xenosoft.de/Debian_Wheezy_Sam4440ep_Netinstall-2.iso
The Newer Kernel
http://www.xenosoft.de/Sam440ep-3.13.0.tar.gz
The drawer containing the extracted kernel is Sam440ep-3.13.0

Guys, it seems as if people are sending DDNI some harassing emails re the Amigans Linux thread.
If you are please stop it.
I would also like to state that I have not sent him any messages or emails.
Let us move on.
My Linux work is still available and up to date.
I have configured both Sam440ep and Sam460ex kernels to be as close as possible
so what works on my Sam440ep-flex during testing should also work on the Sam460ex after compiling.The last kernels were cross compiled on an X86 machine under Ubuntu so that environment is still available to me if needed. It only takes about 20 minutes to compile a new kernel .

@Spirantho

BUT all the topics are under their own headings so if he didn't want to read about SAM Linux he didn't need to click on the heading, it's just that simple so how the hell he can claim Linux threads were clogging Amiga related threads I'll never know. I know he wasn't having a go at Linux or Spectre but the complaint was so stupid and anyone with an ounce of foresight could predict Spectre would feel devalued.

The Hyperion forum has a link to show a member all new/un-read posts since they last joined. Seems some take offence to seeing a list of linux links vs os4 links. I've never used that feature, I go to the forums I want to read, so never noticed the issue that bugs them, before now. The simple solution would be to delete that feature option, make ppl look for posts they want to read, problem solved.

I feel the complaint is out of line myself, just some members need to start searching each forum for new posts, it so easy, just look at posting dates to find new ones.

At the same time, I feel linux developers should not give up because of one thread (that I know of). I can understand some anger, just hope it wears off in a week. At some point, I'd like to try linux again & I usually need help.

Eeek! Please don't go doing that it's the single most useful feature on the site. When I have the time and motivation for a bit of "random support" I go to those lists of unread / unreplied topics to find someone in need.

They currently can mark whole forums as read to quickly remove uninteresting (to them) posts from thier unread post feed.

@Spectre660

It would be a beatiful and big thing if you'll be able to compile a proper radeonHD 2D and 3D hardware acceleration for sam460ex

Thanks for your Linux support on Sam machines

@Thread

Perhaps Linux news dominated because no news and activity regarding AmigaOS and forum only shows that? Perhaps more news from Hyperion would be another solution? Just a idea...

And the thread on amigans was almost laughable (if it would not be so sad). People know how to motivate the few doing something

@Spectre660

I can understand you when you invest a lot of time (and partly money) in something others benefit of and you only get negativity as response then you are disappointed and drop. I hope you stay on the platform and not all think that way (on all platforms)

That forum is for user support. Most AmigaOS topics were about some problems that needed solution, or about feature requests.

even if, but when you read the thread on amigans it can be seen as a kind of Linux-bashing thread where a number of users said that they dislike Linux on SAM/X1000. Hardly motivating to Spectre.

The few people left that are still active doing something do not earn anything with it so there is only "positive response" left as a kind of reward for the time invested. If people do instead get negative response like in this thread they loose motivation and drop. Sadly in many cases they drop all camps and leave the community. People on AmigaOS camp should think a little where they would be without 3rd party developers and rethink their behavior.

@Spectre660 and @m3x

Thank you, both!

By the way, I saw the changes Spectre660 applies to the kernel for the Sam460ex:

"drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/radeon_device.c"
- DRM_INFO("register mmio base: 0x%08X\n", (uint32_t)rdev->rmmio_base);
+ DRM_INFO("register mmio base: 0x%llx\n", (uint64_t)rdev->rmmio_base);

"include/drm/ttm/ttm_bo_api.h"
- unsigned long base;
+ phys_addr_t base;

Can you (Spectre660) please explain them, just my curiosity.
Do they fix anyhow the bugs preventig to fully use the 2D hardware accelleration?
I have tried them, but I only end up with the 3.13 kernel in frame buffer only mode.

[small comment on the situation]I sincerely do not understand why if somebody has the freewill to work on Linux, that causes somebody's mind misbehaviour. Please, don't bother for those ranting guys around, just move on.[/small comment on the situation]

@virgolamobile

I found the patch doing some research for the Sam440ep ring test issue .
The Author was responding to a thread about ring test failed error on PA-RISC and
mentioned that he was having the same problem on a Sam460ex. He found one issue and did this patch which he posted in the same thread .

to quote him :

"One bug I found when working on drm/kms support for the ppc was that in
struct ttm_bus_placement the base address type was wrong: it should be
phys_addr_t, not unsigned long. The PPC460 is in 32-bit mode but physical
addresses are >32 bits."

It does not fix the 2D or 3D issues as all GPU acceleration is turned of once the ring test fails but does allow the Radeon HD cards above the HD 4000 series to work as well as allowing proper frambebuffer support for the Radeon HD cards.
So we are at the same point as the Sam440ep.

I link to the Post referred to below .
