@F0L

If the name means nothing, then why change it?
There is obviously a reason behind it.
Somebody somewhere has made a decision and therefore it's important to somebody.

There is certainly something to see, nobody is moving along just yet.

Cheers

bingo! there is so much going on in the background with lawsuits, rumors, and moves like this, but the companies and personalities involved are completely silent. that silence merely feeds speculation, and as this thread demonstrates, most of that speculation isn't exactly beneficial.

tabor doesn't ship month after month; silence. hyperion loses control over ExecSG, silence. lawsuits over IP and trademarks yet again, silence; dealers stop stocking systems, silence. AOS4 development apparently halts, silence.

what are users supposed to assume? that everything is moving along just fine?! enough with the damned silence. this isn't a community of millions, but of hundreds. A-EON, hyperion, et al don't have to engage directly -- even a blog post would be welcome. anything other than perpetual silence and neglect at this point would be welcome.

Has someone mention this article already?

generationamiga

Could be a good reason for this namechange.

As you would expect, I can only comment on things which are pertinent to A-EON and not other parties.

In contrast to some down beat posts, I would like to point out very positive development news that has occurred over recent times with actual public releases as a result. I get the impression these events passes by and it is forgotten in haste.

It recently started with the Enhancer Software Graphics Upgrade which introduced some wonderful things such as Radeon Polaris chipset support (RadeonRX driver) and updated RadeonHD Version 3 driver breaking through the 256MB graphics memory barrier!

Enhancer Software 1.5 is complete and released as a free update last week - surely something more to welcome !

A plethora of games releases ensued from the hard work of Kas1e, Daniel Muessener and Hans De Ruiter all working under the Amiga Developer Team project.

Meanwhile excellent developers such as Capehill are evolving the SDL library to keep up with the steady pace of development in the 2D/3D graphics sub system. Likewise HunoPPC is working hard and releasing more advanced game ports.

Development for the benefit of our customers continues in earnest. It is no public secret that we are working on Enhancer Software 2.0 right now. It is the largest project that we have done to date and features some more ground breaking software taking this OS in areas it has never been before. All at substantial development effort and cost.

The X5000 is still selling and is being bundled with an ever expanding range of software. We continue to improve the firmware and drivers for it behind the scenes for the benefit of users.

I would suggest that we have had the best period of development in the last decade and there are far more positive events to celebrate than focus on minutiae which simply detracts from our enjoyment of our hobby. Because if we are not enjoying using our systems why are we here?

Maybe they lost the license, all these sub licences from Hyperion seemes to be questionable IMHO.

nothing of what happens is really that unexpected. in fact over the years it has been repeatedly pointed out, that products branded as "true" amiga(something) may once lose (or be called on misuse of) the licenses in question and subsequently losing their legacy reference lose the most of appeal they had for the target audience.

yes if you rent a apartment your normally not allowed to forward rent it out to someone else.

They were given exclusive rights, not someone else, and they can't automatically do what they please with it. if you can't say your the owner of that brand.

@amigakit

It's a sad truth that good news tends to get overshadowed by bad news far too easily.
But that's just human nature.

There are some some nice developments across the whole of the extended Amiga family.
I would honestly say in some ways, we are better off than were in the darker days.
But the politics and shenanigans over what should be a pleasant hobby does put a downer on the situation.

There is not a massive amount of money, devs or companies left.
So why all the drama?
Much easier if they all worked together and stopped wasting time, money and effort on legal battles.

Talk of bringing back ex users / devs or even new blood will always be hot air until this toxic situation is resolved.

Cheers

@FOL

Even the CD32 has "Amiga" written on it in big red letters...

I don't normally comment but in this case.

The AmigaOne X5000 was developed by A-EON Technology for Amiga OS 4.x

Its name was chosen by beta testers and community vote. It's full name is:

AmigaOne X5000/20 for the P5020 and AmigaOne X5000/40 for the P5040 variant.

For convenience it is usually shortened to X5000 but it is and will always be an AmigaOne.

I trust that is an end to the speculation.

@Mimifan

It should follow "Designed for AmigaOS 4" sticker instead just like on Windows based PC's "Design for Windows" sticker.

Maybe so, but apparently from what I've seen here it can be all anything you want, you just can't legally market it as "AmigaOne" anything as you seemingly don't have access to those rights and Hyperion can't grant those rights

@TrevorDick: > trust that is an end to the speculation.

Not really, because it´s obvious, that the official name dissapeared from the website of the main-reseller and your businesspartner (Amigakit). Just to save space? Come on!

So I am aifraid, speculations will go on, unless you explain this step.

Come on Trevor, that's your heart talking! It seems the legal wranglings have stripped the X5000 of its AmigaOne badge. I pray that it's reinstated but as it stands it isn't. I could call it the Commodore Amiga A5000 in my own home but it isn't by any stretch of the imagination is it?!

interesting, not that it will effect me in anyway, I do think names are important, they shouldn't be, but they are. If pi got rebranded Amiga, I think we would all go nuts and it amazing how many time friends of mine got in touch with me about Commodore making Phones, even though it took me 10sec to work out it its just an android generic phone rebranded commodore.

I actually warmed up and like the AmigaOne as a name if it been drop its not the end of the world, and like most I usually just refer to my AmigaOne as the X1000.

I do wish the whole legal crap on the amiga name died! After all I think it safe to say now the community decide what is and isnt Amiga related and weather it feature the brand or not community will decide not the people who hold the brand if AmigaOS4.2 had to be called OS4.2 i would still buy it, just as example.
