This may be a copyright infringement. Has the translator (Loong) been given permission to publish the translated article like this by Datormagazin?

Yes, ofcourse. This isn't the first article that I translate from DatorMagazin, btw.

Maybe an Admin can change this

Cons:
Fast, stable and neat operating system
Very interesting developer platform

Cons:
The hardware is perhaps a tad expensive

maybe one should say Pro's?

I stand corrected - nice initiative.

The translater should, in my opinion, jazz up the translated article withe a few screenshots and post references to it to non-Amiga related websites - the publicity would hopefully benefit both Amigaworld.net and the AmigaOS community at large.

Screenshots (from the magazine), on the other hand, would actually be copyright infringement ;)
But I agree, screenshots would have been nice, we'll see if some other shots might be added at a later stage.

Done. Thanks!

I agree, Matthew Kille and others did a good job on the GUI. IMO with some new icons AmigaOS4 will have a pretty good default look without becoming too much of an eye-candy distraction.

Although ultimately I agree with you, AmigaOS4.0 is intended to run most OS3.x (ancient GUIs from the early 90s) software and IMO too much eyecandy and overhaul would likely result into consistency problems and may alienate some classic fans who do not share ideas on a new look.

I therefore hope that when a new default GUI look would be introduced, the classic theme would remain optional.

mikeb: i agree with u on that, though things like extended menues / workbench addon's and such would work as before imo...

Excellent review - thanks for translating it so that us shockingly mono-literate Brits (amongst others!) can share the experience!

The performance of AmigaOS 4 is impressive. You seldom sit around and wait for something to happen, and since it's all written in C++ you've got to say that the developers has done well optimising their code.

I was under the impression that right now developers are making things to work as they should and after OS4 was finished, they were going to focus in the optimization.

If that is true, then performance will still improve.

Nice review and a taste of things to come once the official rlease is out. Could not help noticing that after all the flack recieved for the price of the A1 that the reviewers comment was a "a tad expensive" which in German I assume would be "a little expensive".

t seems that third party reviewers take on board the small runs and prices that engenders and see it as no more than a minor problem. Interesting detail.

Thanks to the relatively easy porting of Linux applications to AmigaOS 4, there's a good possibility of a larger software portfolio.

What?? I thought it incredibly difficult because of AmigaOS not being POSIX compliant.......

although that library Rogue wrote on os4depot.net should help..

Oh.. or are they talking about SDL here?

The next kernel/update will support ixemul.library, which will make porting *NIX apps much more easier.

If you're referring to the posix thread library, that was mainly EntilZha's work.

Thanks for the translation!

Like Chunder said, some of us unfortunately aren't bi-lingual (or more), unless you count some really old high school French

Hmm. Rogue/Entilzha, can one of you confirm or deny this one:

Is ASO4 actually mostly in C++, or in C?

(really wanting a clean C++ API at some point... )

Not to discredit the review by any means, as I _like_ reading things like it, but anyone 'outside' would see it's obviously written by an Amigan, even if it wasn't published for an Amiga mag....

And what's with this, without any clarification:

Quote:

If you want to, you can also use the machine to run OS X, but that's another story...

yeah, I know you can run MoL...but I think the article overall would get ripped to shreds were it posted outside the Amiga community

Still a fun read tho!
