Announcement   Announcement : New project "adtools": GCC, GDB and binutils for all Amiga-related platforms
posted by EntilZha on 13-Jul-2005 16:03:04 (8343 reads)
Supervised by well-know Amiga developers like Thomas Frieden, Hans-Jörg Frieden, Olaf Barthel, Anrija Antonijevic, Stefan Burström, Gunther Nikl and Jens Langner, the sourceforge.net project "adtools" was created. The goals of the project is to unite future development of the Amiga development tools like gcc, binutils and gdb to a common developer platform. In addition to currently supported platforms like AmigaOS, future support for MorphOS, AmigaOS/68k and AROS should follow.

The CVS repository already contains the current state of development of the AmigaOS4 gcc 4.0.0 compiler package. In addition, new versions of gcc (4.0.1) wil follow later this week, as well as the AmigaOS4 changes for gdb 6.3. Binary packages will be available shortly.

A long-term goal of the project will be the submission of the unified Amiga development tools to the official distributions of the respective tools, gcc, binutils and gdb.

Interested developers of all Amiga colors (AmigaOS4, MorphOS, AmigaOS3, and AROS) are invited to join the project.

The project pages can be found here.

Nice, good to see something being done to unify and help developers.

Aw, damn. You know how good I am at typos, and how lazy I am at correcting them.

Of course, this was meant to be "AmigaOS4, .. ,AmigaOS3".

Damn! Why is this only for developers?

I could "add" tools I like quite easy thank you. Open Office, Firefox etc.

Kudos!

I hope Hyperion will offer support for OS4 devs in the future through the purchase of an SDK CD-ROM or similar. Having a free compiler toolset is nice but I wouldn't mind paying for support if it was offered.

Some might enjoy the old GeekGadgets days but all I remember is spending a month or two fighting with the tools to get my 68k C++ projects compiled. I'd rather buy a known working compile of the toolset if given a choice.

Still great to see a common effort though. Compiler experts are hard to come by and even harder to come by in the Amiga scene. Code on!

We're currently preparing the update for the SDK, and plan to produce and SDK CD-ROM in the future as well. I think that the SDK installation is relatively painless

Because it is running AmigaOS 3?

You might notice that WinUAE is not specifically mentioned either, nor is AmigaOSXL...

It says "all colors", though, so if someone wants to do a specific Amithlon verision - welcome aboard.

So? so does AROS

Okey If there is no developer for Amithlon its not easy to support.

But as I read it you want to support os3/68k aswell, if thats true then Amithlon chould be rigth along with it.

I havent done any coding on Amithlon but as I see it os3 and Amithlon is one source too target in gcc

anyway good initiative, lets hope its gonna be a succes on a wide range of distributions

So? so does AROS

I am not sure that the AROS folks would agree

Amithlon runs a plain vanilla OS 3.x system. AROS is its own OS. The only difference could be that someone would want to target gcc to produce x86 code for Amithlon.

There is no such as Amithlon 68k software, those are AmigaOS 3.x applications/games which are run under Amithlon's m68k emulation.

You can compile x86 executables for the Amithlon, but the OS is still AmigaOS 3.x.
AROS in the other hand is AmigaOS clone as much as MOS is.

Well, the point is that 68k software runs on Amithlon. And, like I said, Amithlon programmers are welcome as well

Ah, great news! Thanks...

Just to let everyone know, I've compiled cygwin-binaries of binutils 2.14, gcc 3.4.4 and gcc 4.0.0 and they're available here until something official shows up.

(THIS IS CHANGED NOW!!) It's config'ed to be put in /usr/local/amiga

The dirtree kind of looks like the native SDK as well, so put stuff in:

/usr/local/amiga/SDK
/usr/local/amiga/SDK/clib2
/usr/local/amiga/SDK/newlib
/usr/local/amiga/SDKinclude
/usr/local/amiga/SDK/include/include_h
/usr/local/amiga/SDK/include/netinclude
/usr/local/amiga/SDK/local

and so on, I think you get the picture...

PM me here or on #AmigaWorld on IRC if you need any help.

I've already compiled YAM with it (screenshot) ;)

Regards,
Jocke 'Zerohero' Birging

This is excellent, and what is needed- both extending an invite to the 'similar/other' OSes to share tools, and to get the changes merged into the mainline GCC.

A big fat hairy GREAT IDEA!

Before I download a huge wodge of sourcecode, can anyone tell me if I can compile this directly in OS4 (using the current public SDK), or am I going to need to bootstrap the tools using Windows or Linux? (if it's the latter, I'm going to wait until the weekend )

Please note that we usually use /usr/local/amiga for cross-compiler builds, although that shouldn't be a problem as long as the SDK stuff is correctly set up.

@CodeSmith

It requires a working configure setup, which we don't have right now on OS 4, so you need a cross compiler setup e.g. on LinuxPPC.
