Software News   Software News : Status update for Paihia - new web browser in development
posted by jahc on 6-Nov-2005 5:45:50 (7663 reads)
A status update of the new standards compliant browser Paihia can be found at http://www.paihia.co.uk - Read on!

Quote:

Grande Paihia is a modern, small, fast, and portable web browser. With complete support for XML, HTML 4, CSS 2.1, DOM level 3, and EcmaScript 3, Grande Paihia is more than capable of dealing with most of your internet needs. Grande Paihia is written from the ground up and is not based on any existing web software.

Versions for all the various Amiga systems are planned. Progress is slow but steady. As of November 2005, the CSS engine is all but done and being tested using the W3C test suite - biggest issue to arise from testing is performance. The language parts of EcmaScript are done, the object library isn't. And DOM level 3 is about 20% complete. All of this and the source code for the Paihia web engine is less than 700k uncompressed. Visual Studio compiles the engine to a binary around 300k in size - a tiny fraction the size of anything else in the field!

While Amiga users everywhere have been pining for IBrowse 3.0, smithy has been working hard on his browser for the last year or two, and hopes to release it in 2006! Keep coding, smithy!

Ehem... so "Grande Paihia" is now compiled for winblows... i really don't
know if that means anything good for us..

Of course, i wish him all the best too... but i'm still concerned about the
above mention of visual studio.. At one time Paihia was meant for AmigaOS
(remember the screenshots of early versions?), but now there's not a single
mention of Amiga... acutally, of no OS beside that hint for Winblows..

Smithy, if you read this.. would it be possible to get a short clarification
from you?

It's multiplatform now. Hes doing it on PC because the devtools are better.

Sounds promising and good news. But, I won't believe it until I can download an alpha/beta version.

Wow, it's sounding really impressive! I think even an alpha version with a bare-bones user interface would be useful when the DOM, etc is done. The early versions of Camino/Chimera on OS X were still better than the 'finished' browsers of the time. I'd also love to see a screenshot or two. Quick question: will there be a Paihia library/datatypes?

Chris

I've got to say I'm a bit underwhelmed. Not in the potential of such a project (well, OK, I still see limited to zero commercial sales possibilities outside the Amiga market, but maybe I'll be wrong there), but iirc, the old website used to have more info, while there's now a single page stating only what jahc submitted in the News item.

While it's possible they don't want to give any more info 'until it's done,' moreso after the original Xmas release date I think was formerly given....dunno, more info would be useful, like current screenshots, something. Things like 'EcmaScript is done,' without any info od what that actually is, really could use some more info

I wish this project all the best and hope it's completed.

@wegster

EcmaScript is an alternative to JavaScript.

ECMA-Script is the standard... JavaScript (Mozilla and friends) and JScript (Internet Explorer) are interpretations of it...

Maybe they are concentrating on the program rather then creating a flashy website, remember Hyperion have only just released the OS4 website, and OS4 has been in peoples hands (albeit in beta state) for a number of months (year even?)

Interesting, will have to do a search for that one, don't recall ever hearing of it.
