What I found most interesting about this is that they're going to use E17 as window manager. Maybe that will encourage faster development of it :)

Ermm, but i've probably missed something but...

The news title sounds weird :
"Amigaone news : Yellow Dog on PS3"

Anyway, this news item can be easily found on PS3 news site or Nux ones.
So why here?
And please, no more "PS3 is the mystery device or the next revolution thingie for OS4".

I would like to see a commercial OS on the PS3. This would be interesting.

I wonder if Mc Ewen has tried to contact Sony to jump into this opportunity. I hope he tried. IF OS4 will be ship with PS3, imagine how many millions of copies they can sell. Hyperion and Amiga Inc. cannot loose this opportunity!

Wow!!!

Not all of us do... I don't hope that.. I'd rather it wasn't personally.

So you don´t want AmigaOS on cheap, powerful, mainstream and up to date Hardware then

Well in reality I can't see the point in porting AOS40 til PS3...

I don't see the PS3 as a computer, and I have no personal interrest in PS and PS3, I would much rather see some of the announced HW finished.

Cmon, take a look at all the Amiga OS on PS3 thread.

Imagine what Hyperion and Amiga Inc. could be if "only" 100.000 OS4 copies copies were sold with the PS3, at the price, for example, of 40 dollars each: 40 *100.000 = 4.000.000.

@ sloxa

That would IMO be interesting, probably the fastest PowerMac to date.

PS3 (60GB version) + Keyboard / Mouse input + YDL / Mozilla/ OpenOffice.org => Could be a very interesting little cheap homecomputer.

Linux on a PC often causes a lot of fuss to get everything working properly due all the different (half- / un-) supported hardware available. But with all PS3s coming with about the same specifications it could be made to function and install easily.

I suppose that would depend on how it is executed. If it runs on just one SPE or the core it will most likely not be anywhere near as fast as the fastest G5 machines.

readily available hardware with a pretty decent features/price ratio?

All you can do on a MicroA1 but much better, faster and with more software to run?

A500 was also seen as a console. And it was sold as a games machine because it was quite powerful. With a PSX3 you could do everything you can do with a microA1.

I don't have personal interest in boards that run at 600Mhz without L2 cache and sold for premium price. I'm not interested in buying old computers with sub 200Mhz FSB, specialy if I have to pay the same as readily available hardware.

Could you tell me what advantage would offer a MicroA1 or "Samantha" compared to the PSX3 if all these systems ran OS4?

You can always take it out from the console case and mount it into a PC tower so your friends doesn't laugh saying that you only use a "console"

If we talk about *NEW* code compiled for the CELL cpu the speed will be similar.

The only reason Apple didn't replace G5 with CELL was that there was a huge number of apps compiled for G5 that would run slow on CELL because it lacks the OOO unit. But if you compile the code with a decent compiler that orders the instructions correctly you won't get noticeable slowdown.

ATM OS4 uses 800Mhz cpus with a 133Mhz bus. Even if we ran the current code on CELL without recompiling it would run *faster*. And next apps can be compiled ordering the instructions to suit the CELL better.

I don’t mind getting AmigaOS4 out in numbers, but I think AmigaOS4 need to be bundled whit it, in order to do that.
