Software News   Software News : Epistula Instant Messenger
   posted by Slash on 19-Jul-2007 23:56:38 (7110 reads)
Epistula v52.12

Latest public version of Epistula has now been released for you try. As usual , you can find it in the usual place; Epistula Website.

As a good will gesture, I've provided a public keyfile for download so everyone can now use Epistula without the 10 minute timeout. If you haven't already, please consider donating though, it makes me feel better

Important Note: You will need the latest version of OS4 installed, i.e. the one Hyperion released this week.

Read more (mod note)

Please before sending me emails, I know the following don't work (yet):
- File Transfers
- Plugin Avatar Support
- Auto Away

I'd like to point out that they are supported in Epistula, however I haven't written the plugin to support these features yet.

Bug reports, crashes, crash logs all welcome but please, no bitching about missing features.

Excellent work, THIS is the kind of stuff that needs donations - bounties rarely achieve anything - give the people who are here NOW and struggling your appreciation in form of donations, it's almost like spitting in their face when people fund bounties that never materialize and yet don't appreciate what is there NOW and in front of them.

Keep up the good work, if I owned an Amiga compatible computer I certainly would send you a little something.

Chris

@Slash

Very kind of you, I'm sure many users will like to give it a go, thank you.

BTW, will the msn plugin be available for download?

--edit-- < --- ok, included in the archive, thanks Kicko

@Crumb.
Next time please read what you download. On the page when you download epistula it says:

"MSN plugin provided in archive" ;)

EDIT: I myself thought the same first time i visited the page, took me some time to actually see its in the main package ;)

oh! I haven't download Epistula yet and as I saw a "disabled" MSN plugin icon in the download page I thought it was not available yet

I'll test Epistula tomorrow at the morning

@jahc
Aye, the features will get implemented eventually, though only when I get the time to do so. People tend to want everything now now now

@ikir
Yes, although donations are still accepted.

@petrol
Huh? Epistula is an instant messenger client, not an email client so you'll need something like YAM for that. Epistula does provide a feature to monitor a POP3 mailbox though, but you can't read the mails from it.

@all

Thanks for the kind words.

@Slash

Regarding Ikir's question, what is the idea of the keyfile if Epistula is now free? Or THIS particular version is free and future will be for registered users? Or you haven't implemented yet feature which completly disobeys the keyfile?

It is clear for me (from the news item) that Epistula uses public key which disables 10 minute timeout (without the keyfile you still has the limitations). This is why I am asking. Nevertheless it is good, that you decided to make such move.

@mailman

*sighs* Why do people ask such silly questions about something so trivial, and at the same time read so much into the reasons why something has been done like it has?

It's easier for me to provide a keyfile which you just put in your program directory than to pick apart all the code that checks for the keyfile in the actual source code.

There is no hidden agenda here!

Although I'm using OS3.9 on my Amiga I really would like to know something. Using Jabberwocky is the best way so far for me to use msn on my Amiga but it does not send or receive Turkish characters properly. Does Epistula send and receive foreign codepage characters? And if it does, how does it do it? Does it need a library that is only available for OS4 or does it have the code in it? Could you please help the programmer of Jabberwocky (if he doesn't get offended ) to fix this issue? Beacuse it is the only option for me :(
