Software News   Software News : WookieChat 2.7 released
   posted by jahc on 15-Dec-2007 11:53:35 (4962 reads)
WookieChat 2.7 now available for AmigaOS 3.x, AmigaOS 4.0, MorphOS and AROS.

Lots of changes in this release. Optional graphical smileys with themes and smiley popup chooser, graphical nicklist, configurable charset support, unread messages counter, automatic changing back to primary nick if you're disconnected and you reconnect before your primary nick times out, various GUI enhancements and options, nick completion works in private tabs now, an alpha quality AREXX port, enhancements and improvements to the Colour Settings (loadable themes, pictures able to be used in backgrounds), the /away command now affects all networks you're connected to rather than just the one being displayed, the IRCNet and BitlBee networks work better now because Wookie is no longer hardcoded to channels beginning with "#", added a "Clear all buffers" menu item, attempting to open a private tab to someone when one already exists will not open a duplicate anymore and instead switch to the existing one, there are quit/join notifications in private tabs now so you can see when someone
you're chatting to privately has left IRC, added autojoin and nickserv password fields to the Servers window, bugfixes, and more.

Click here for a full list of changes in v2.7

Release Notes:

Graphical smileys have a transparent background under MorphOS and OS4, but not under OS3. For this reason, I have included two additional smiley sets with black backgrounds, and white backgrounds.

The ARexx port is very buggy. If you want to play with it, read the docs on how to enable it. But its turned off by default due to being quite crap. I might work on it in the future though.

When using listview-style tabs some users report crashes when enough tabs fill the display to cause a vertical scrollbar to be created. Please change your NList vertical scrollbar setting to "Auto" or "Always", as it seems to crash with "Full auto".

Zune is still a bit weird with WookieChat, i.e. when configuring colours, and when remembering window size and positions.

Some users have reported random disconnection. Turning off event sounds can fix this. It seems the datatype system waits if it cant play audio straight away, such as when the MAME arcade emulator is running. In this situation, when the IRC wants a response from your machine, it doesnt get it.

What is it?

WookieChat allows you to connect to Internet Relay Chat networks (IRC) and chat with other users in a text medium in real-time. Some of the server groups are preconfigured to join an Amiga chat channel upon sucessful connection. Executables are provided for AmigaOS 3.x,4.0, MorphOS and AROS. WookieChat is uncrippled SHAREWARE.

Download it from the WookieChat homepage, and soon from aminet.net and os4depot.net.

For OS4 users I've created an AISS smilies theme, grab it HERE and drop it into the wookiechat smilies drawer, restart Wookiechat and select the theme in the GUI settings window. You will need AISS V4 to use this.

@Jahc

Feel free to add this to the package.

Great. Thanks for supporting all flavours of Amiga. I'd hope a few more
developers followed your un-biased open minded example.

I've switched to it and am using it now. I routinely make a fresh install when there's a new non-beta version out, as I did this occasion, and then copy over the settings files and stuff.

The installer seems to have a problem, though. It trips over itself at the point when the Sounds directory needs to be installed, and when the Smilies directory needs to be installed, apparently because those directories are not included in the installer archive. Copying them over into the installer dir from the latest beta, or from my previous install (which contains the latest beta) fixes the problem, though. I guess jahc forgot to add those dirs to the archive.

Anyway, I'm now using 2.7 OS3. Anyone know what's up with the new, really tall I-shaped mouse-pointer thingy I get when the mouse is over the chat lines part of the window? It's much taller than the usual "I" that appears in other programs to signify that you're mousing over the text part of the screen...

I also seem to have an empty line of text at the bottom of the chat text part of the screen, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't doing that in the last beta.

Anyway, other than those issues, everything's hunky dory. So far...

(Edit: Oops, messed up the smilie)

It's a new feature of the latest nlist.mcc. To disable it, go into MUI Settings and click on the Options tab, deselect Custom Select Pointer.
EDIT: to be more precise.. MUI Settings > NListviews > Options > Miscellaneous

I've updated my OS3 archive with the missing files, whoops.

I've reuploaded a fixed OS3 archive to http://wookiechat.amigarevolution.com, and is also pending moderation at aminet. It was missing files in smilies/ and sounds/ and causing the installer to fail.

Okay, so what is the new, ultra-tall I-shaped mousepointer supposed to DO in this new version of nlist.mcc?

@Nomad

It's a "Modern OS" thing to tell a user that the mouse is over text and make it harder to copy / cut text because you can't easily see your mouse pointer anymore.

Yeah, but why is it four text-lines tall? Isn't that kind of excessive? It should only be just large enough for one to recognize it for what it is (i.e. about the same size as the regular mouse pointer), rather than big enough to fight Godzilla with. Kinda suggests there's more to it than just a "you're over a section of text" indicator.

@Nomad

Use a bigger font or turn off BIGSPRITE in your monitor tooltypes, that pointer is roughly 1 and a bit text lines here.

@Severin

Eh? I'm on an Amiga1200, and so far as I know I've got the font set to the default settings in WookieChat. I'm not about to go with a gigantified font setting just so the lines of text now equal the size of this mousepointer thingy.

On my 13" Magnavox Professional RGB Monitor 80 (which seems to be almost the same monitor as the old Commodore 1084, just rebadged and with some minor technical differences) the "I" mousepointer is a half-inch tall!

How do I get to my monitor tooltypes? I don't see anything by that name in my Prefs drawer. Would that be done in the ScreenMode program? (Probably not.) Where do I turn off BIGSPRITE?

(Edit: added last paragraph)
