News   News : Former Netscape Executive Ends AmiZilla Booty
   posted by DiscreetFX on 20-Nov-2009 2:23:32 (39738 reads)
Chicago, Illinois November 19th, 2009

For Immediate Release

It's with great sadness that we must announce the end of the AmiZilla Booty. The former Netscape Executive has been concerned with the length of the contest for some time and now no longer wishes to participant. Listed below is a statement in his own words about why the contest is over.

"Today I wish to end the AmiZilla Contest, this project has gone on way too long with no project updates from any coders that might have been involved. Some that never even donated to the contest have tried to use it to cast DiscreetFX and myself in a bad light. Rumors were spread that the funds were being used for other things. I take this as a personal insult myself since I am in control of the funds and am of high ethical character. AmiZilla was always about helping the Amiga, AROS & MorphOS community get a modern browser. It was a contest though and without a clear winner the contest was not helping it's sponsors, mainly DiscreetFX and myself.

Many times I was going to increase my contribution to the bounty considerably but I did not because of rumor spreading and in-fighting. I advise everyone in the Amiga community to do more and talk less in the future. I officially withdraw my AmiZilla funds and hopefully make the Amiga community wiser for it. Actions speak louder than words, this is my action. I do see a light at the end of the tunnel though. The developers of Amiga OS 4.1 have taken it upon themselves to actually do the hard work of porting Firefox to AmigaOS. They would have made the programming team from Netscape proud."

That's the end of his statement. He did say the CD is maturing and all the funds minus his contribution will be transferred back to DiscreetFX. Listed below are the options that those that donated have.

1. Transfer your donation to Timberwolf to help that Firefox bounty succeed.

2. Request a refund and have it processed through our accounting department. Your donation was always safe with DiscreetFX. We have never done any type of coupon scams or anything else unethical in the history of the company.

3. Transfer donation to Open Video Toaster. This effort to bring video editing and effects to Amiga OS 4.x, AROS and MorphOS is in need of more donations to make it thrive. AmigaOS, MorphOS & AROS have no video editing applications anywhere near the quality of the Amiga Video Toaster. What they do have is the rare opportunity of the complete source code to this classic best selling system. Use that opportunity wisely!

4. Receive the equivalent of your donation in DFX products.

5. Request your donation goes to Charity Water. Many people in the world are suffering because they don't have clean water. Help them by transferring your AmiZilla Booty donation to this great charity.

Sorry for the bad news but AmiZilla's key backer has spoken.

Best regards

DiscreetFX Team

Sorry to hear this, but nevertheless the bounty somehow served it's purpose....it made us all belive in bountys for the amiga platform. We saw the Amizilla bounty grow, which showed us all that it could be done. The fact that nobody took on the bounty is not the most important message here.

Thanks Discreet and former netscape man for trying hard....you did something good even though it did'nt turn out the way it was meant to. But perhaps you guys started a wave, which was very important for the platform....think about that! - and forgive people for mistrusting the bounty....after all we heard nothing about it for quite some time, which can give room for wild speculations.

Anyway i think you guys earned some street respect with this!

And after all what is better than street respect ?

It's sad to hear this but it's probably the right thing to do. Amizilla didn't give us firefox but it made me believe for a long time that we one day would have a modern browser and that was very good.
Now we have OWB and timberwolf is progressing nicely.

I Hope this will increase the timberwolf bounty even more.

Hello,

give the bounty to netsurf or OWB author or to another project interesting to the amiga.

I think refunds would be the way to go. That way folks could chose to support the open toaster, timberwolf or any other use of their money.

@all

Am I the only one that finds it "strange" that the booty ends, now that there is a real chance of getting FireFox on Amiga - why isn't the Netscape money or part of it transfered to Timberwolf?

@DiscreetFX

I can't remember if I ever made a donation.. How do I check that now that the site is
more or less closed?

This is good news. The Frieden's have already done much more than Amizilla.
It would have been a shame for Amizilla to continue.

The bad news are rumors the Netscape Executive is talking about. :-/

@Samwel

Send us your full name and or e-mail address linked to your Paypal and we can check for you.

@bitman

The former Netscape executive did not like his ethics questioned and was insulted by that. He chose to end a contest that programmers were making no progress on and that was taking far too long. He did not want an endless contest to reflect badly on himself and DiscreetFX.

Because it's another bounty, some people do not like that timberwolf is a OS4 only port and some don't like that it's closed source.

I'm mostly into OS4 so i wouldn't mind but if they were transfered but others have other opinions

I don't find it strange at all that the bounty ends. Should have happened years ago, since no real work has been done on it for a long time. The "progress" reports always sounded like a lot of waffle to me.
The bounty is not for Firefox. That's why the money cannot be transferred. Transferring the money requires the consent of the donators.

@polka

Sure, but if the "netscape executive" cared about Amiga and Mozilla/FireFox - he could transfer all or part of his donation to Timberwolf...

Maybe he would have done that if people had not ####ed him off.

Yes, he could do that. Maybe he just lost interest in Amiga, partly due to this disappointing experience. Lots of talk, but little work which was done.
Probably more time was spent on designing the Amizilla logos and writing announcements than on actually coding.

My opinion about this is that logically an first chief of Netscape isn't the man that will give an upper "high fly" to the Amiga.In fact probably thinking more on his own prides than a chance to the AMIGA.Yes AMIGA to go again?! He don't have this priority this man.The Brotherhood of people who uses and likes Amigas could be the key to reopen the gates (not Billy,not you...ha ha)

He is probably thinking more in his prestige and commitment wish its house that it says no to continue with such a project in order to keep his things to a higher level.

Thanks anyway for taking its time in taking the AmiZilla like a project to believe in better things to come near!!

Bounties? It could be done in time le t's wait to the Timberwolf work of Hyperion bros.

That 's really a very good thing!

@DiscreteFX,

finally the dream of 'one browser for all Amigas' ended, it was a good decision to give me the possibility of getting the money back I donated.

When I did my donation, I had my doubts if the port will ever take place, but I thought to myself, 'when everyone refuses to pay, nothing will ever happen'

When I get back the money I will reinvest it into an AROS bounty, when something Amigaish may remain, it must be open source.

What is an Amiga ?

Answers
1: An outdated abandoned computer hardware
2: A brand name owned by a company known for scamming people.

Certainly not. I also have my doubts. Seems more like some people got a little nervous now that a Firefox release is near. Even if it's only for OS4 now, it's likely that there soon would've been a version for other platforms and then this bounty would've been fulfilled and DiscreetFX would've been required to pay almost $12,000 dollars to some happy programmers... so from their point of view, it was high time to cancel this thing to make sure that they don't lose any money (remember that DiscreetFX also had a virtual $2,000 in that pot).

From my point of view, the bottom line is this: The AmiZilla bounty was only upheld as long as no Firefox was in sight. Now that we're close to a release it had to be cancelled because some clever porters could claim the money. Heck, even the Friedens could've changed their mind and take that AmiZilla bounty by releasing the sources! Who knows? So to make sure that no money has to be paid, the bounty was cancelled now.

This doesn't surprise me at all by the way. I always had a hard time to believe in this mysterious anonymous rich person story. Deus ex machinae or what? As long as he doesn't reveal his identity, I'm not believing this story at all. Sorry. No names, no credibility. Who knows if there ever really was a $5,000 donation? Could've been a fake after all. This former Netscape exec story really smells like one big hoax. The fact that it is cancelled now shortly before a release greatly contributes to the theory that there never was a former Netscape exec who donated $5,000. But that's just my 2 cents...
