   posted by Channel_Z on 15-Dec-2009 3:58:03 (7962 reads)
The Polish website Retroage has interviewed the Natami 3D-artist Bartek Kuchta about the Natami project. It provides a good overview of the project for those not previously familiar with it, as well as some new information and a look at some of the games developed for the platform along with WIP pictures. The interview is available in both English and Polish. (Read more!)

the best part of NATAMI:
"More engineering talent to the community" is a good thing.

I am very happy with my sam440ep and my Minimig, but I will buy one of these if they ever go on sale and the price is affordable.

It sounds so like the Amiga we could have seen if Commodore did not go bust when they did.

The BoXeR sounded like the Amiga we could have seen if Commodore did not go bust. Of course, I think Gunnar et al. may have more credibility than Mick Tinker and AntiGravity.

Maybe Natami could be be even more improved and integrated into a new generation AmigaOne like computer. This way it would look more attractive to maybe some demo programmers, etc. A new AmigaOne with 720p output :P

Maybe if it had an improved expansion slot and a new PPC (or x86) based accelerator, and it had a PCI Express slot, it would be a way cool machine.

No, the Amiga we would have seen if C= hadn't gone bust would have been a Alpha box running NT4 (yes).

I liked the interview

The gfx on the games look cool - I can see a flood of Popcap style games getting made which I really love.

I cant wait to get one of these machines !
This machine will definatly help win the demo contests !

24 bit copper effects - OMG, it would be like a small console !

@Ancalimon

Not likely. The Natami vision is to expand on the Amiga chipset, enhanching the 68k CPU line, and running 68k AmigaOS with extensions.
When it comes to demo programmers, most of them would like to stay on 68k for obvious reasons (smooth assembly language, 25 years of in-scene knowledge).
Although the Natami team has been experimenting with some old Mac G3 expansions, integrating a PPC into the system makes little to no sense unless Hyperion suddenly starts rewriting their OS completely and starts supporting the Amiga chipset on real Amiga hardware.

@asymetrix

Yes, the possibilities are indeed huge - especially compared to most AmigaNG systems which are about as attractive as gaming and demo platforms as a slow Linux machine.
The Natami team believes that PS2/Dreamcast tech level games could be accomplished with the first generation hardware.
I personally look forward to see classic 2D games and demos making use of the boosted classic chipset!

@klx300r

No, it is a standalone classic Amiga. Think of it as an A5000 if you wish.

How is the FPGA RTL language code (ie hardware "source code") considered, will it be open-sourced like minimig, or is it closed-source/proprietary?

@billt

It is closed-source for now, to keep the door open for business proposals. However, if you believe you can contribute in any way, the team is welcoming assistance.
Open-sourcing it in the future is not out of the question at all.

I think this is a pretty smart way to handle things for now, considering that there are certain competitors out there (Individual Computers, Minimig production etc.).

Speaking as a customer who would like to buy this.. I would like to see a future version of this Natami board designed as an A500 or A1200 motherboard replacement.

And I'd ask for a Mini-ITX. :)

The consumer version, if financially viable, is planned to be a smaller board than the developer board, although with less possibilities for expansion.
This might fit in a small chassi like a A600 style case or a joystick casing.

Realistically this should be when and if the team gets:

a) Some kind of financial backing for mass production
b) The chipset polished enough for commercial release (not just to enthusiasts), including the 68k softcore for economical reasons
c) Finished patching AmigaOS to take advantage of all new hardware functions and gotten a decent software library taking advantage of the same hardware
d) Some kind of licensing deal for distributing OS3.x and the Kickstart in big numbers along with the hardware
OR
AROS 68k with the AROS kickstart replacement providing the same functionality as OS3.x.

The success of this depends on the amount of people getting the developer boards, and if the interest to develop software for an enhanced Amiga chipset prevails.
If enough economical backing is provided, even creating an Amiga ASIC would be possible.

Personally I think that there are vastly bigger numbers out there wanting to run a system that works like a real Amiga than the few hundred people currently interested in AmigaNG platforms. Just look at the amount of WinUAE users.

Demosceners, pixel artists and animators wanting to use classic tools, musicians wanting the classic Paula sound together with 44/48khz CD quality sound, using OctaMED/Protracker, game developers, etc would all want a system like this.
Not to mention all the retrogaming buffs.

The entire classic software library, all the hardware-hitting stuff, as well as modern web browsers and video players running at usable speeds are going to be avaliable.

This is what the Amiga should have been, if bad management and legal nonsense hadn't killed it. And now everyone can be a part in rebuilding what was lost.

Nice to see some people that understand the spirit of the Amiga, even todays consoles are more like an Amiga than a PC, but why stop at 1280x1024 (720p) - like Sony... :)
Anyway, it's a good start , like the C= A1000-start...
I would love to program some 3D games on it, hope for "shader" support.. :)
