Software News   Software News : Directory Opus Magellan II Bounty
   posted by spotUP on 2-Feb-2012 11:27:35 (6051 reads)
This project aims to collect sufficient funds to purchase the source code of GPSoftware's Directory Opus Magellan II (version 5.82, AmigaOS) for free use under the AROS Public License, a derivative of the Mozilla Public License 1.1.

The purchase will also a include a limited license for the trademark "Directory Opus Magellan" that will grant the right to use it for software running on Amigoid platforms (real hardware or emulated) in general, specifically hardware running the AROS (all flavors including hosted), AmigaOS and / or MorphOS operating systems.

Use of the source code is limited by the AROS Public License and use of trademarks for software running on other operating systems or platforms than specified above is strictly prohibited unless a separate licence has been negotiated.

If the requested sum will be raised and the transfer will be completed, the source will be released and made available on a public SVN page.

Funding Goal: 5600 USD

@retro

yes thats one of the issues we will see (if there will be ports for all formats and if they will be the same SVN etc) i guess and thats why there should be set proper goals and not just "open" the source which will in the end lead into 5 diffrent branches or whatever....

Ohwell, i sent my cash to Spotify bounty for this round and when i see more about Dopus bounty then i will donate there aswell (i am a huge fan of DopusMagII)

My opinion is that spending bounty on Magellan2 is a waste of money. And my opinion is - why spending on software that I used [in past] as replacement for AmigaOS when we can have AmigaOS to look like Magellan2? I think it is easier to implement cool stuff into AmigaOS than to port another and whole new OS replacement...

Dj Nick

My thoughts exactly.. 5600 euro could be used for an ex amiga programmer to come back on the scene to do some work on workbench or intution or something and incorporate all this into OS4.

Only problem that there is no one who will implement all of this (as there is not many developers), and we will be forced to wait forever, while in meanwhile (for next few year) we can have dopus magellan

@AmiKit
As spot post the news item on other amiga sites as well (amigans and amiga.org too), and change all of them now will a bit late, imho then better will be wait till that news will go way from front page, and then, we will bring it one more time with new text (then at this moment we will already have some summ), now its about 700, so we need 4900$ now. I also will add some q/a to the text about for why we all need that and so on. In end that can be even better.

If bounty will not reach for the lets say 1 year, then of course we can just re-use money for all the other bountys. But i somehow sure we will collect necessary summ.

@djnick: DOpus doesn't replace AmigaOS. It replaces the Workbench. Today, OS4's workbench is way below DOpus in terms of features, multi-threading,.. There's not a single blocking operation in DOpus. Drag and Drop is also present everywhere in DOpus (up to the info window where you may change icon by drag/drop, drag/drop tooltypes between different icons,...). Not to mention the integrated FTP, the fact it can be fully customized, the filetypes,...

That said, it's dated in some points: no (at least direct) support for OS4 icons, dated UI (no MUI/Reaction),... But saying it would be easier to improve current Workbench is just wrong if you ask me.

"let's say 1 year", let's say?

I thought the exact period was set together with precisely defined procedure that is initiated if the bounty is not raised in a given time. Any potential donor has to know what happens to his/her money and when. Otherwise he/she might not be willing to donate.

Bounty says nothing about, so dunno if there any 100% exact timeline. And as summ not small one, its can't fills fast for sure. How you expect we can set any timelines in amiga world ? Its only will make things worse when it will not fits into deadline (even if it will be on half of way).

Anyway, 1 year its nothing in amiga world. Everyone wait for big bountyes for years. If we will collect for example 3000 soon, and then, progress for latest 2600 will be slower, then for sure we need to wait a bit, and make more announcements in compare with resending the money to other bountyes. 1 year seems pretty real timeline to sort everything, but sure, we can hope that it will done faster.

That's why AmigaOS4 has Filer... (which is "inspired" by DOpus Magellan)

@kas1e

EVERY project must have a dead-line and rules. And a precisely defined plan what happens next. Eg. "after a year we send you an email asking you whether you want to refund your money or transfer it to another project or wait eg. 6 months more". How other you want to assure potential donors that the money won't be wasted? Can I influence what happens to donated money? And when exactly?

You are right of course and sure, better to point it in the bounty like you say, but from other side, if deadlines will break, it will a bit sad. But yes, i think we need update a bounty text by that. I will contact with power2people and with olaf about.

But, to be note, its somehow forces that i have responosbility for all of this. But i am only help to collect the some by some PR later. And as i not the GPSoft , i can't say what will happen when we will send them our money. Maybe they even will take them, and give us nothing :) I do not know if Olaf or power2people have any contract with them, but i think when we will colelct the summ power2peple admins will do everything right, as they are sane persons.

And yes, you are right, that all should be done better , but that is amiga world, and if we will wait for all kind of stuff, it will take years, years and years. So better that we already starts, and then now can fix it bit by bit (expectually until normal PR text not published).

PS. I send mail to Olaf about all the changes, so bounty will be changed a bit in terms of 1 year deadline + some other stuff.
