| A couple questions: are any kickstart files changed? I have two sets of kickstart files, so can it tell which one to change (this could be a problem)? Should Kickstart version be 53.12? Is the only way to tell that update 2 has been installed is that Workbench version is 53.3? _________________ X5000 / microA1(OS4.1 FE U2) / CodeBench / Imagine / Blender Lightwave 2019 / Microsoft Visual C++

| Downloaded and installed, thank you all!
As for the downloading problems i think that, even if you checked after Opi's remarks, it could still be a problem on the server side, as suggested by what Swoop reported in post #39 (download.php instead of the actual file), which is a "typical" problem on a lot of other sites. I believe that along with content-disposition and content-length you must send the content-type header too (i'm unable to check at this moment if i receive it from Hyperion's server).
Regarding BillE and the browsers comments, even if i don't "share" his wordings i think he has a more than a valid point. This comment is silly to say the least, but it doesn't surprise me a bit: "IBrowse is pathetic nowdays... stop complaining about OWB, it is the best browsers we ever had." It could be the best, but it isn't. It severely lacks basic features that any browser should have, like download status or at least a notification when the download finishes. Using it in this form, when you are on dialup like BillE is, is a royal pain in the ###. Ibrowse's gui blows OWB's out of the water, i still rely on IB or on NetSurf for downloading stuff, even if i have a broadband connection. NetSurf is really brilliant and highly underrated, it has both a progress indicator and it sends a notification through Ringhio when it finishes.
As a final note, i still think that the best thing (especially for files >100Mb like Update1 was) would be to distribute files via bittorrent, using a private tracker. You'd have multiple benefits, like relieving the server without breaking it when multiple people want to download an upgrade (actually, with bittorrent is an advantage to have multiple people on the same file...) and you will automagically have download resuming available for those on dialup as a nice side effect. _________________ Proud Amigan since 1987 Owner of various Commodore and a SAM440ep\OS4.1FE See them on http://retro.furinkan.org/

I cannot attempt the update for a day or two.
Is it still suggested/required to use a fresh partition for Update 2 ?

Nope, this is an in-place upgrade. No need to burn an ISO it's simply an archive with an Installer. _________________ A600 OS3.1 ACA620 | '030 A1200 OS3.5 | µA1-C 750GX OS4.1 | SAM460 OS4.1 | '040 A3000 OS2.1 | Christian Aid |

Where on earth do you get the idea that Ibrowse is the most used Amiga Browser? Looking at the stats for Amiga25th.co.uk, Ibrowse comes nearly bottom of the list for browsers, Top (BY A LONG SHOT) is OWB, then Firefox, i.e. Safari, - heck, just about every other browser in existance before we get to IBrowse.
Just so we can make things clear. IBrowse is not the greatest and most widely used Amiga browser out there. _________________ No cause is lost if there is but one fool left to fight for it.

NetSurf 2.5 GUI for OS4 seems better to me than the old stylish IBrowse... _________________ BACK FOR THE FUTURE

Well, it isnt so clear at all... your stats dont say anything about which people exactly surf there... maybe its some OS4 people, some other using Win/Mac/Lin and very few using OS3.x. In this case, your numbers arent that clear at all
I use IBrowse quite often to do downloads and browse Amiga sites, just because its faster, more reliable in downloading and much more comfortable due to its GUI. I use OWB just for some testing, nothing else. Instead, I use my Winblows machine for sites that need CSS etc.
I strongly believe that Im not alone with this. OWB is nice, but still far from being really useful for alldays needs. The missing download indicator, network monitor and other goodies are making it clearly inferior right now, IMHO. This might change in the future, but actually its just a plain Browser with very basic features.
And I still think that theres nothing wrong in demanding a compatible download from Hyperions website. Its possible to make successful downloads with IB from a load of other sites (even sites using CSS etc.!), so its at least strange that it receives corrupted files from Hyperions website. A thing worth investigating. |

I am going to chirp in with my two cents on the browser issue. I use Ibrowse almost exclusively. I am on dialup and the ability to go into Netstat Manager and stop javascripts indiviually is amazing. My dialup is at best and rarely 28.8. Can't wait for Timberwolf, but I hope it has a Netstat Manager. Last edited by cope on 01-May-2010 at 09:49 PM.

| I used OWB to download the update and UnARC ton dearchive the files.
I understand why Hyperion doesn't bother anymore with IBrowse. It is outdated and not really in the up to date way of AmigaOS 4.x
When Leo says that Amiga cannot evolve because of the users not wanting to evolve, he is right (for once ).
One can use OWB or NetSurf to surf the web and download files (I configured OWB to use OWBAdressBook and GetVideo, I don't really need anything els right now, even if I'd like a version with all these features embedded, à la MorphOS).
It's up to us to go ahead.
Complaining because the lack of support of a 15 years old browser is weird in my opinion, even more if you use AmigaOS 4.1. _________________ PowerMac G5 2,7Ghz - 2GB - Radeon 9650 - MorphOS 3.14 AmigaONE X1000, 2GB, Sapphire Radeon HD 7700 FPGA Replay + DB 68060 at 85Mhz

Because, and that might come as a surprise, I didn't get any complaints. I read on the forums some place that the download didn't work with IBrowse, but nobody complained to me directly. |
Poor excuse.
Not wanting to split hairs here, but you do never tend to reply to any emails so no wonder people do not then email you to tell you anything. You do tend to discourage people from contacting you directly, so no wonder.
There are enough OS4 devs that read forums that one way or another problems should get back to you.

Which, for me, clearly shows that my attention is better directed elsewhere. |
The poor web design that resulted in this is really bad management, good web design has always stated that sites should run on ANY browser and not just the latest incarnations which in the Amiga world are never available anyway we are alsways catching up.
I agree your attention is needed on OS4 itself, maybe fixing things that were BROKEN in update 1, before adding new features. I guess you never got told about those either ? But other OS4 devs sure know about them.
The cause of the ATIRadeon problem is actually known about (and yes it is an error introduced in the chain between the first OS4.1 and update 1) so I was surprised when it did not make the update. |

The website, which is under the OS4 team's control (and out of the users') had a little custom code added which would prepend a warning along the lines of "iBrowse is old and unsupported. Use something from this century" at the top of webpages, due to issues caused by people trying to use iBrowse to register. |
This is probably the first time we agree on anything as I am not into x86, Amithlon etc
But you have hit the nail on the head, the entire reason why IB doesn't work is the addition of the daft text telling you not to use it. Without that it would have worked. So IB does not work because someone has added text to the beginning of it saying so. WHy not do that with IE, Firfox then and make sure people have to use an Amiga browser to download the OS
Of course because doing such things is bad practice so why do it with IB.
Quote:
however, the file the web server provides to iBrowse downloaders is different to that it provides to users of other browsers |
Exactly, it NEVER happens anywhere else just on the one site where you would expect better Amiga support.
I know a lot of banks etc do not work well with IB, but the webmasters have an excuse as they only know about Windows apart from a few that may have heard of the Mac, but this is different, it IS after all an Amiga website.
BTW Apart from the odd layout all my banks *do* work with IB, only one even needing spoofing to do so as they do not recognise any Amiga browser OWB included. Now OWB on the other hand will just not log into some of the banking sites at all. Now which is the better browser ? OWB may display it nicer but if it cannot get there that is of no use whatsoever! |
