I realize my comments went against this current euphoric thread. Apparently the sarcasm didn't come through clearly.

Doesn't change the fact that Eyetech didn't deliver as advertised. I expect nothing from, nor have any respect for Eyetech. The fact is at the time I did my Earlybird order I was not aware the sound would not work, nor that they were removing the chip as a result. My dealer did not mention it either. At the same time, I do not track every obscure Amiga related posting on the internet. I even tried to get developer data, as promised under the EarlyBird program, to play around with the chipset myself, and they would not even send a reply.

As for people who complained about paying for unusable chips, I was not one of them. I was just reacting to the notion that Eyetech removed it based upon user complaints, like it was some kind of good thing on their part.

I am truly happy to see Steve and Davy got it to work and some XE owners can make use of it. Much good on them. I am disappointed to find out I am not among the few that can benefit from it.

I'm not saying Eyetech did the right thing, cause hindsight is of course quite good

But under the circumstance, I understand why Alan did what he did. And I still think that it's going to work out ok for you as well, you'll just need to find someone who can solder a TQFP48

I do it all the time, so it cannot be THAT difficult, right?

Quite a few surplus-stock websites do carry plenty of these devices requiring only a $US100 minimum order, but they generally deal B2B and not with individuals though. A dealer ordering enough parts would be a possibility.

Shoot, I'd be willing to go $15 or even $20, as it costs that much for a cheapie sound card. Not sure but I think I paid about $16 for the soundblaster that is in it now, which could be used in a PC when I get around to building another system for the kids from the spare parts of old upgrades.

tried it yesterday with the ac97 tool - I have the chip, and the drivers work nicely !
I even took out the SBLive to test it properly - since put it back though !
nice to have that onboard sound, even if I'm not using it !
