The ac97 doesn't get to the ready state (I tried under OS4 too), so either we don't know something about the VIA, or there is a hw fault. |
Or both |
the former is a High probability, given their track record. actually the latter can be attributed to that too !
seems to me certain people (like Alan Redhouse) will want this fixed, as otherwise it means using up the solitary PCI slot on the uA1 for a replacement sound card. in which case it wouldnt fit in ie: the demo DVD case, unless a right angled PCI adapter were created.
I want to use the AC97 too, so I can make my own mind up as to its adequacy. pretty please ! _________________ XH558 - the worlds last flying Vulcan. ok, its actually XL426 in the picture but you know what I mean.

What are the capabilities of the onboard sound? If it worked that is! |
Just simple 16-bit full duplex playback and record, no DSP functionality.

No, the microA1 has a C-Media CMI8738 / PCI-6ch-LX. This is a DSP with integrated codec, so it doesn't require an AC97. I think it was confirmed that this chip works. Too bad they picked the cheapest chip out of 3 which does NOT support S/PDIF.

Soundcard/Firewire is a weird combo |
It's actually quite a good choice - it allows the connection of a remote breakout box with a high data transfer rate without using up too much by the way of resources. USB is more resource hungry than firewire and, I would imagine, it probably cost less to use the off-the-shelf technology rather than create their own method of connectivity.
I'd like to see drivers for the DMX 6Fire - that's a good all rounder card in the same vein as the Audigy2 _________________ Folding@Home Team AmigaWorld no: 33424

| Can somebody please tell me WHY people insist on developing drivers for the worst sound cards on the planet. Even more why anybody would get excited by the development of these drivers
For the people that don't know any better. SoundBlaster makes white noise generators. The hiss on a soundblaster is deafening. They have yet to make a properly shielded PCI sound card.
I know they are the most popular of PC sound cards, but PC users are idiots!!! Why follow Their lead.
The next thing you know people will be wasting valuable time developing drivers for Adaptec SCSI cards. Which are possibly the most horrendous SCSI cards you can buy. Hence the immense popularity in the PC market.
rather than kowtowing to the stupidity of the masses. Educate them on why this is a bad thing and steer them into buying products that function properly. |

The time that SoundBlasters were white noise generators are over. Cards like the Audigy2 are actually very good for their price, you just shouldn't compare them with 'pro' cards which actually cost a lot more. If you had done some research, you would have known that the Audigy2 was actually reviewed quite good in Sound on Sound although it has some flaws for home-recording. Now the majority just uses these cards to play games and I can say they are doing a more than adequate job for that. It's all a matter of price/value, and people who are low on money would appreciate the ability to buy a cheap card which suits their needs. Most people also connect their computer to very cheap speakers, so purchasing an expensive card is completely over the top.
That said, if you read the news correctly, I also made a driver for the Terratec 512i. This is supposed to be a bit better card. And there are more drivers coming, so why don't you contact me to tell me what cards you think are good value for money. I'm working on one which should please you in any case...
Oh, and you could also think about writing more drivers yourself...

You are right about the audigy 2 being good. I missed that part, guess I was real tired last night. I just lose it when Amiga users clamor for SB card drivers because except for the notable exception of the audigy II they pretty much are all crap. However recently I did notice a disturbing trend some of the newest SB Audigy 2 based cards have more noise then the older Audigy 2 based cards.
The Audigy 1 sucked big time with all kinds of distortion. Most of the time I listen to my computers though a high end mixer and amp. Connected to either a pair of Sennheiser HD-600 or HD 450II. Depends on what I am doing. I Don't like to disturb the neighbors. ;) Most SB's would have me tearing my hair out.
You did do the terratec 512I driver That uses the FM801-AU that is used in a bunch of decent and yet inexpensive sounds cards.
I didn't mean to criticize you guy's. You do great work and are really unsung heroes in my book.
Kurt
You aree right about most computers speakers being pure crude. It alway's amazes me how people spend lots of money on computers and stuff. Then they forget about the most important parts. The human interfaces the keyboards, monitors, mice and speakers. They are what you see, hear and touch. Yet most people gets whats on sale or use what they have lying around. Silly really |

The one thing I found out is that the FM801 probably is more of an audio controller. The ADC and DAC is done by a Wolfson MicroElectronics AC97 on the 512i and another one on the SB cards. Wolfson is pretty good, but I reckon the quality of the cards itself (layers etc.) also contributes to the overall quality. The problem with the SB cards is that they are excellent for 48 KHz and can become nasty in other frequencies like 44.1KHz, because they still have a fixed 48KHz engine. Look at the RMAA results for a clear difference.

M-Audio: Delta series + Audiophile Echo: Mia Audiotrak: Maya 44MKII Egosys: Waveterminal series
These are relatively low-cost solutions that nevertheless offer very good sound quality. I've intentionally excluded expensive pro-cards as well as USB/Firewire solutions. _________________ The Rear Window blog
