(if the information in that article about PPC-usage is really 100% accurate)

it is... Windows has themselves confirmed that XBox 2 will be based on PPC but take the part about 5 processors etc. with a HUGE pinch of salt.
regarding the PS3 being released etc. in 2004... nope... Sony's big launch (in Japan, of course) for 2004 is the PSP and that will be released late 2004/early 2005... (if they can meet their own ridicoulous price/performance statements, which everyone doubts including Sony engineer's...) expect PS3 in roughly late 2005 to late 2006 (I think they want the PS3 to hit the market a couple of months before christmas). _________________ MicroSoft Game Studios ==

| the reality of this all is it will all end up being ppc based and ppl who use the current pc,s are in for a huge shock as they are going to have to scrap their current computors and software and start from scratch as the future of the ppc unfolds the end of the x86 is inevidable |

| Well, I do not believe they will try to move the PC to x86... I think one of the reasons they want the PPC for XBox 2 is that people no longer can say "ah, it is not a gaming console, it is just a crippled down PC". If they would move the desktop to PPC also, they'd have the same argument again, wouldn't they ? At least I think they only try this for the gaming console (like the other console manufacturers :) ). Though still AFAIK there is no official confirmation for PPC-XBox2 (but I think it is true, too :) After all it is not the first time we hear this... ).

| You could argue that a PPC based xbox is just a crippled Mac, i don't see that argument going away. |

| Mac's are proprietory hardware not clone's. The Xbox, was virtually off the shelf parts, certainly commoditised to a certain degree, which was why people said twas just a PC in a box. MS won't be reusing any of Apples technology in the Xbox 2, so It can't really be called a crippled Mac. |

| Don't forget IBM uses the PPC in their own servers. They even are going to release G5 Blade servers. Talk about high density CPU power!
And remember Virginia Tech? It seems they are talking to NASA, NSA and Argonne National Lab to set up super-clusters of G5's based on Apples X-serve.
Things really are looking good for PowerPC, not just Apple! |

Actually I think Steffen only means that when people hear that the Xbox only has a 733 mhz Intel processor in it and they have >1.5ghz in their desktop then they are bound to wonder if it really can deliver.
In other words it's easier to compare apples with apples than with oranges.

Not so sure about this.
Still remember why top of the line PPC processors are never available for the Amiga?
It's because Apple has taken everything Motorola or IBM can produce. If IBM can't ramp up production to keep up pace with the demand from several new high consumption customers I'm afraid Amiga will be left out unless we can pull some really big numbers out of a hat!
Otoh there is still lots opf time until then so who knows? _________________ Fixed A1G4XE 7455 RX933PC with fried CPU Sapphire Radeon 9100 128mb ESI Juli@ 24bit 192kHz Envy24HT Sil 680 Ultra Ata 133 E-ide SeaGate Barracuda 120gb 8mb cache

| Three PPC970...
Good luck to Microsoft.
On the paper, the Cell is thousand more performant than any powerpc technology. PowerPC becomes "old" as its base is still compatible with first PPC cpu.
Custom chip is expensive to produce but the "non backward compatible" allow the use of lastest technologys.
Waiting for PS3. _________________ AmigaOne XE --- 7455A@1400 --- Radeon 9000 Pro --- RAM 2GB --- SSD 40GB
