hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : New AmigaOne firmware available
posted by EntilZha on 6-Oct-2004 10:25:20 (20759 reads)
Leuwen, Belgium - October 6th 2004.

In preparation for the upcoming update of Amiga OS 4.0, Hyperion Entertainment is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the much improved U-Boot 1.1.1 for AmigaOne SE and XE motherboards.

New features include:

* Support for multiple graphics cards. At this time the last graphics card (usually the AGP card) is used for primary display. Later versions will include an option to choose.
* Support for booting off a Silicon Image 0680 IDE controller. This feature has to be selected manually at the moment, by entering setenv ide sii from the U-Boot shell.
* New CPU support: IBM PowerPC 750GX is now fully supported.
* A problem has been fixed that made the U-Boot environment settings unavailable when rebooting from Linux.
* Support for LBA48 IDE Drivers, i.e. you can now boot off drives that are bigger than 160 GB.
* Support for the new Second-Level Bootloader (that can boot Linux besides AmigaOS), to be distributed with the upcoming AmigaOS 4 update.
* Numerous bug fixes and improvements.

The new U-Boot will be required for the upcoming update of Amiga OS 4.0, to be released shortly to registered AmigaOS 4.0 pre-Release owners.

The download is available in our Downloads section.

The ISO should contain everything necessary to make "an El Torito" cd, the iso image should just need burning onto a disk (its all I did last time)

I'll try it tonight and see.

Greg, it's easy. You've downloaded the .ISO, right? Run MakeCD, select Edit/Append Image Files, select the ISO file with the chooser.

Then select "Write tracks", don't forget to change "Test mode On" to "Off" and you're away.

It takes about 4 mins with a blank CD-RW.

So, the big question now is: Is the UDMA driver in the update?

As I can't really make myself go and buy a new IDE-controller if there is no use for it in this release.
If the update has the UDMA drivers I will order one as fast as I can now (or has I missed something else that will benefit from an other IDE-controller other than getting connections for 4 new IDE units?)...

I've been an idiot again.

The CD burnt first time no worries -- I was trying to boot off it via the IDE CDROM selector in the UBOOT preferences window.

Idiot idiot idiot!!!

For anyone suffering the same mental hanicap, it needs to be installed via the same boot method of interprut until "]" then type "diskboot 500000 X,0;bootm"
where X is the number of your CD drive.

I am an idiot, I am an idiot - I must read readmes before doing anything.

I must admit, I was gonna edit my post, to reflect that you cant just stick in drive and boot disk automatically, but thought you would know that

@Bodie

My SIL IDE card was delivered today. The Uboot to support is available today. I love it when a plan comes together!

Works here.

They haven't fixed the "uboot eats up the first typed character after a ctrl+alt+alt reboot" though ;)

I think I've managed to type in "oota" instead of "boota" due to this error like 50 times since I got 4.0 :)

Yes, the burn is alright but you burnt the image file instead of its contents (I did the same thing on my first try).

The ISO image is on the CD when it should be three seperate files.

In MakeCD choose File Image instead of System File. Then you should be right.

Well, I have 3 files on the cd. But I have the same error.

I boot with the instructions from the OS4 CD-inlay.

hmmm I did burn the updater.iso as an Image and when I boot OS4 it shows three files 'BOOT.CAT' 'README.' 'UPDATER.IMA' so that looks okey (I think).

You should use the .iso image with nero or cdrecord to burn it straight to cd.

Then interrupt the A1s boot sequence.

Go to the prompt.

Then follow the firmware update instructions as in the OS4 install guide

( diskboot 500000 etc )

You are, by the sounds of it, trying to force it to autoboot - it won't.

Dave.

Quick question about the Sil0680 cards this supports. In looking around to buy one of these, I found out that there apparently is at least one revision of the 0680 chipset out there. At SIIG's website I found one card that I'm interested in but they list it as having two different Sil0680 chipsets and as a result two different BIOS versions that can only be used for the appropriate chipset. They list Sil0680 and Sil0680a.

Can someone at Hyperion comment on this? Is the driver for OS4 only compatible with one of them, or both?

Does anyone know when the next batch of XE boards
are expected to ship?
