Software News   Software News : Quake 3 ported to AmigaOS 4.0
   posted by spotUP on 6-Jul-2006 14:52:10 (18881 reads)
This is a quick and dirty port of Quake 3 for OS4. To play, you need the latest
version of the Quake 3 data files (retial version plus all patches). You also
need the latest MiniGL.library (included in this archive, copy to libs:).

The port uses the QVM jit, so it can also run all the mods (tested with Urban
Terror).

Source code is available on OS4depot.net too. The port is unpotimized, so don't
expect it to be blazing fast.

If you want to contact me, write a mail to thomasf()hyperion-entertainment.biz

DISCLAIMER: This software is provided as-is, with no guarantee for usability.

Also note: This port has NOTHING to do with Hyperion Entertainment, it's a spare
time project of me. DO NOT write to Hyperion Entertainment regarding support.

Get it here!

@varthall

launch the game using the q3 script
you'll need to edit the path in the script first or it will ask you to assign work:

Just swapped out the AGP 8500 for a AGP 9250..... sweet

Thanks guys...

Anyone know what memory requierments there are? It doesn't start here, but if I boot without wbstartup it at least gives me a grey screen and then lockup. I have 256Mb in my A1, and some 170Mb left after boot, usually...

Joachim Birging

Sounds like a W3D driver bug introduced by newer MiniGL? There is a work around, start some W3D application first.

If I start it after a normal boot, it just exits without any output. If I boot without wbstartup it gives me a gray screen and then lockup. That's a better explanation of it, but it doesn't sound like a W3D bug to me, not like the others I've read about?

edit: You're right, it was W3D bug, started if I ran WarpView first. Seems like my radeon 7000 can't cope with it though, sound stutters in the menu screen.

Regards,
Joachim Birging

@zerohero:

Sorry, I am a bit tired and misread that you had a Micro-A1 (with Radeon 7000) where every new MiniGL programe locks up with older public drivers.

If this is not the case, you have some other problem.

Thanks Hyperion for this port.
I have 28 fps(1024x768) with "demo four" on my Radeon 9000 PRO.
It's absolutly great playable. But i have often the message "out of memory", because i have only 256 MB ram.
I hope with T&L we can get over 100 fps.

@Amigaworld admins
What do you think about a quake3 server on amigaworld.net.

Edit:

Ok so i just copied my q3 cd into quake3 drawer so i can see baseq3 etc.
I copied all the files before the dir too. But probably they arent needed. Dunno. They dont hurt.

Patchrelease 1.32 (update) i couldnt load for some strange reason. The browser just waits. So probably it isnt there or something (idsoftware). Anyway do we need a pc to use this patches as i dont have any, only A1 and xbox.

Im no fan of Quake games and i have sea sickness when i play them. I tested both local play and multiplayer game. Worked fine. Some multiplayer seems to need updated quake. Some works. One i got stuck as it waited to enter. Got also a crash while playing multiplayer after a time. I reset and started quake3 again. Grim appeared but i could continue.

I can always say to my pc friends.... hey i got quake3 on amiga. Their answer would be.... oh yeah i had it for some years ago.... smiling....

Thanks :)

If I understand it... Mickey_C asked for Quake III to be ported... Soon after you port it.

Sorry, that doesn't work... I made that port a few weeks after Q3 was released, but didn't release it yet since I think it's too slow and can be faster... But since there's no sense in letting it rot, I'd rather released it and the source code, too, so people could adopt it if need be.

Well, we got a new minigl library with this release, that's something to be happy for!

It's the same one that was also available in the SDK.

Many thanks for the port! One question - you mention that we need "the latest version of the Quake 3 data files (retial version plus all patches)" - I assume we can buy any version of QIII, but where can we acquire the necessary patches?

Yes. Basically, get Quake 3 retail version, and download the patches (1.31 I think is the current one).

It doesn't run here, too, althought I'm using the demo version files, it might not be supported. It exits without any output. I wonder what's that ".q3a" in the homepath inside the q3 script, and if I should leave it there. The baseq3 directory is called demoq3 here.

Just create a .q3a directory in the Quake 3 game directory (the directory the binary is located in). It uses this for the settings file.

Sorry, forgot to mention that...

Thanks Thomas! Please don't forget to release the new micro AOne U-Boot.

I don't have anything to do with U-Boot at the moment.

Please get the idea out of your head that Hans-Jörg and me are the only ones working on AmigaOS. We're just small parts of a large team.

It should work with 256 MB, although it's a tight fit and might not work for example with Urban Terror.

In fact, I'm using it as a test for the virtual memory swapping...

Ugh, yeah, there's a bug in the Radeon driver that executes old code that isn't used anymore, and for some reason, this works with some programs but not with others ... sorry about that... Has been fixed, I think, for the beta testers, though...
