Software News   Software News : Quake 3 ported to AmigaOS 4.0
posted by spotUP on 6-Jul-2006 15:52:10 (18363 reads)
This is a quick and dirty port of Quake 3 for OS4. To play, you need the latest
version of the Quake 3 data files (retial version plus all patches). You also
need the latest MiniGL.library (included in this archive, copy to libs:).

The port uses the QVM jit, so it can also run all the mods (tested with Urban
Terror).

Source code is available on OS4depot.net too. The port is unpotimized, so don't
expect it to be blazing fast.

If you want to contact me, write a mail to thomasf()hyperion-entertainment.biz

DISCLAIMER: This software is provided as-is, with no guarantee for usability.

Also note: This port has NOTHING to do with Hyperion Entertainment, it's a spare
time project of me. DO NOT write to Hyperion Entertainment regarding support.

Get it here!

@murakami

GLQuake can also be used for this purpose. Probably any other that uses minigl/w3d and doesn't have the "problem" will work too. No need to use WarpView if it doesn't work for you...

All I get when trying to play the game, or show a demo, is a high pitched sqeeling noise and a total lockup of my XE.

A1-XE @ 800MHz, G4
256 Mb
Radeon 7000
SoundBlaster Live! 5.1
Sii0680

Regards,
Joachim Birging

Yahooo!
Finally found my quake 3 CD today and got Q3 up and running on the A1..

Absolutely amazing!
Framerate isn't the best and it skips a little, but it's perfectly playable on my voodoo 3 :D

All we need now is an "Amigaworld Q3" server :)

Edit: And online play works good too :D

Is it perhaps possible to compile this with more conservative settings, to reduce RAM requirements?

Source code is available, too ;)

WarpView is quite buggy here.

Try another Warp3D program.

I'm pretty sure Bigfoot's version doesn't need 512MB RAM..

My machine has only 256 MB, and I can run it, but not some of the bigger mods. Depending on how much stuff you have running in the background, you might run into trouble.

@zerohero

I get this lock up too after a minute or 2 of playing.

It comes across as the same audio lockup we used to have when playing audio online (This thread).

A1-XE G4 @ 800Mhz
512Mb
Radeon 7500
and a Soundblaster Live! 5.1.

It was the SoundBlaster that was causing the problem in the above thread. I wonder if it's the culprit here.

FuZion.

EDIT: Sorted the thread link. So far, it's the SBLive 5.1 users speaking up. Any non-SBLive 5.1 users getting a lock up?

AmigaOne XE G4 @800mhz
512MB
Soundblaster Live

i just try TrueCombat mod and it plays very good..
i play it 1.5 hour and there is no any lockups.

but if i play quake3arena it self.. i can only play it 3min.. and my amiga gets jammed!

hmm.. and i get in fullscreen 640*480 -16bit and all detail off/low
only 12fps.

in window i get 35fps. :(

That's to low framerates for a Radeon 7000. Look if you have set "interrupt=yes" in the picasso monitor driver.

@ sloxa

Did you enable interrupts in the Picasso96 monitor ?

@ sloxa

Without interrupt-controlled page flipping, the driver has to wait for the vertical retrace, hogging the CPU... that's why it's so slow...

@RussellB
I think that is a minigl problem. Please start quake1 before Quake3.

On my systerm (A1SE 512MB Radeon9250) I got some randomly locks up however the game was rather playable...
The only thing that i got that was really noisy was that my usb mice will stop work after few minutes of play and than i must use a ps2 mouse...
Not really good thing...

However...

GOOD WORK!

Tuxedo.
