Software News   Software News : Guru Meditation sponsors Petunia development
   posted by GuruMeditation on 17-Sep-2006 0:00:49 (8005 reads)
Since the beginning of the Petunia development sometime late 2000, Álmos Rajnai has been using a classic Amiga to do the work. Every compilation has taken 10 minutes or more, but that is about to change.

Guru Meditation has donated an AmigaOne XE to the Petunia developer and further development will continue on this immensly more powerful platform. Compile times have been reduced to a 20th of the previous time.

Álmos Rajnai has promised to keep using the Amiga 4000 so that optimization to the code will be easier to spot. Developers, still testing their code on legacy hardware, will more easily spot where things are slow, has a better chance of producing optimized code.

Thanks Guru Meditation

@Rachy

A cooperation between you and Richard Drummond would be great, my dream is to play some classic game (and not only games) directly with Petunia !

@ samo79

Yeah, good idea !

Just open a directory-tool, double click on the game,
and off you go. Then while the game is running you
could do a top-menu to do settings in eUAE.

1) A JIT won't help much with playing classic games. E-UAE's 68k interpreter already performs at 68030-level on a AmigaONE. It's not the performance of the CPU emulation that's the problem in general when playing classic Amiga games but the emulation of the Amiga chipset and the generation of the Amiga display. The AmigaONE's woeful memory bandwidth makes the problem worse.

2) Petunia emulates an 68020 - not a 68000, which most games require. Writing a 68000 JIT is more problematic because there's no easy way to handle self-modifying code. The 68000 doesn't have an instruction cache, for instance, so 68000 code doesn't have to issue cache-flush instructions when modifying code which the JIT could make use of (you could do it with MMU tricks, though).

3) Emulating classic games requires a reasonable balance between the relative timings of the CPU and chipset emulations. I don't know if that is possible with Petunia.

4) Petunia is not open-source. I don't know whether it is ethical or even legal to make use of it from a GPL'd application like E-UAE.

Cheers,
Rich

@evilrich

Wouldn't a JIT leave more CPU power for chipset emulation?
Making it work even smoother on bad hardware such as A1's.

Wouldn't it be possible and legal to use Petunia from E-UAE as an OS component?

Alex.
