Hardware News   Hardware News : EFIKA Available - 199 USD - 160 EUR
posted by ironfist on 4-Nov-2006 9:32:55 (14569 reads)
The EFIKA is available for purchase in the Genesi Online Store.

The price is set to 199 USD. Bill initially told us the price would be 299 USD and slowly go down to the target price of 99 USD.

Maybe we can see that target price alot sooner.

The size is bigger than Nano-ITX and smaller than Mini-ITX.
It's a custom size.

The AC'97 chip cost just a few bucks and I think it's the same
as on the current Pegasos-boards.

The memory is soldered onboard. OEMs can order up to 512 MB.

SmartFirmware has no problems netbooting. Version 1.3 also
includes USB-boot.

This is cool,

nice price! Shame about no graphics - but it makes sense for the market it's aimed at - hopefully there will be a version with graphics soon.

I hope genesi can confirm which graphics chipset they will use for a possible up and coming on-board graphics version.

Lets hope Hyperion already have one and an OS4 license from A.inc is in the post to genesi

Even so, it's a nice system for Linux and native AROS - as well as MOS of course

Everyone should wish genesi good luck with this!

Would a Mini-ITX case fit, then? I guess one would have to make his own backplate, though... Or is the layout of the slots compatible with the Mini-ITX standard?

So more memory is only available for larger orders, right?

But there is no Amiga (or even Amiga-like ) system to run on it.

Here are videos of MorphOS running on an Efika system:

Here, here, here, here, and here. More info about that demo here!

As you can see, it *runs fine* on Efika. If it won't be available for the public, then it's *only* because of "the MorphOS Team" has decided that way. And if they make such a foolish decision, it will be *their* loss ...

Indeed, and you can also boot from USB-memory, or even the network!

In what kind of way? As I see it, it will rather be the users loss and probably also Genesi's.

But make sure to take in to account the size of some Gfx-boards:

So no, it doesn't look like it's compatible with the mini-itx standard. I wonder what's the reason behind such a custom form factor... does it really serve to make the overall cost lower?

Efika runs Linux. AROS runs on Linux, hence AROS runs on Efika.

I would much rather want MorphOS running on it, and i might really consider buying it if is realized.

I'm considering one just to experiment with it, play a bit with AROS on it so to make it compatible with MOS maybe, see how much I can trim linux so to make it totally transparent in case you want to run AROS on top of it...

The end result would be a machine good enough to surf the web, do some basic office tasks, perhaps even record and replay dvb videos (is the 603@400Mhz core fast enough for that stuff?). Nothing you can't do with Linux already, of course.

The price is low enough to allow me to experiment with that stuff. I only really need a PSU beside the board, as I can do all the rest via network at the beginning.

On bbrv's blog it's stated that a complete system would come out in 4 months and would cost just a bit more than this... Dunno if it's worth waiting or not.

@ironfist

A bit pricey, specially considering that you stll need an external AC to DC converter. And it can't power 3.5" drives and CD/DVD-ROM's. Cool, nonetheless.

-- edit --

This one costs a bit less and supports 3.5" drives and CD/DVD-ROM's, other than being more powerful. There's also the 120W version, which costs more than this one, though.

-- edit2 --

All in all, given that bbrv stated in their blog that a complete system with HDD would cost only $249 (195 EUR at the current exchange rate), the best option is probably to wait for it.

Genesi already has shown Efika playing DVDs with no frameskip running MorphOS.

AFAIK MPlayer on Linux runs slightly slower than MPlayer on MorphOS. I guess that on Efika it will be more noticeable.

Don't hold your breath! Also, considering that there's no public MOS available for the Efika, it would be a bit difficult to test whether it all works.

Right now you would need to add 100 USD since that blog is based on the
EFIKA target price of 99 USD.

All small PSU's are pricy. Everything small is pricy, what did you think?

And where are you going to put 3.5" drives and DVD's?! You have one
2.5" 44-pin IDE port and that's it. This is no desktop board for cheap 3.5"
drives and even cheaper internal DL DVD-RW's.

If you need a DVD you will have to use an external USB-DVD.
