| I know almost nothing about hardware internals but aren't there 4 slots listed?
Yes, but you'd be very lucky to find a PCI-E sound card. Not sure about TV-cards but AFAIK most are PCI still. Last edited by Seer on 07-May-2007 at 08:18 PM.

| I agree.
While people have often complained about the price of modern day Amigas, what they fail to take into account is that once you buy hard drives, cases, keyboards etc. the system costs about the same as a decent PC. And the complaint of "it's not fast enough" or "it's old technology" is rubbish. As I have always told PC users, it's not how much power you have that is important, it is what you do with it that is important! My 800 Mhz AmigaOne (on which I am typing) has proven more than powerful enough for my needs, so who cares if it isn't 3 Ghz?
A friend of mine once paid A$7000 for an A3000, and I myself paid A$2500 for an A2000, and I also paid AU$2500 for my CyberPPC card, so US$1500 for a system such as this new one really is not bad at all! Elwood, I think that you are just bashing Amiga Inc. because they are Amiga Inc!
But that brings us to a new (and valid) point, which is that, given the current odd situation between Amiga Inc. and Hyperion, I don't see how this machine can actually be released *with* OS4, which is ironic given how long we have all waited for this fantastic new hardware that is going to run our beloved operating system. Indeed now it may be time for a "20 questions" with Bill McEwan, so that question #1 can be "What OS is this fantastic hardware going to run?"
And please note that this message is not a troll. It is simply about logistics and summarises (I think) what is on every Amigans mind right now. |

Ok this sounds reasonable but then i wonder why in other threads everybody was asking for PCIe slots Last edited by Nibunnoichi on 07-May-2007 at 08:20 PM.

So basically up until this point we had the OS but no Hardware...and now we will be in a situation with Hardware but no OS ??

Just remember that whatever spec is released, you still need the OS you use to have drivers for it. So even though you may want to slap a NVidia 8800GTX in it, no NVidia driver exists for OS4 for example, so it would be a little pointless sadly.
|
Next question is with Hyperion not writing anything for this who is slated to port the OS to this board (once its made), let alone choices on different cards that a enduser might pick?
Especially with Amigs Dev India not being suited to write OS level code according to Bill M.
To me a board with everything built in is more likely to be viable ahead of this power system. Still the question remains who is Amiga hiring to code? _________________ Pegasos2 G3 running AOS 4.1 and MorphOS 2.0 Amikit user, tinkering with Icaros VM (AROS) EFIKA owner Amiga 1200

Ok this sounds reasonable but then i wonder why in other threads everybody was asking for PCIe slots
Mostly for the gfx cards I think, the AGP is dying out, and PCI isn't thought of for GFX (Tho AGP is "just" a special PCI slot).
But as the world moves more towards PCIe I guess we'll see more and more PCIe 1x cards like network cards and sound and TV cards as well, but the better ones might need a PCIe 4x slot. Not sure tho, the differences between PCI and PCIe speedwise is pretty big. _________________ ~ Everything you say will be misquoted and used against you.. ~

| I would buy one if they become available with AmigaOS4 (as I know OS4 from my A1).
When can we see pictures/videos of it running OS4 and what exactly does "complete offering" mean? _________________

| Well, as I said on A.org - I don't even see an announcement for this hardware on Amiga.com yet.
Are Amiga.inc and ACK making joint announcments through IRC now? _________________ Troll - n., A disenfranchised former potential customer who remains interested enough to stay informed and express critical opinions. opp., the vast majority who voted silently with their feet.

Boy howdy you sure don't do you? PCI-Express and PCI aren't the same thing. You can't put a PCI card in a PCI-e slot, and vice-versa. Different connection, different number of wires, etc. etc. _________________ The problem with AmigaOS on PPC isn't that PPC is big-endian. The problem with AmigaOS on PPC is that PPC is dead-endian.

| Nice specifications. When will we get a release date though? Even a ballpark figure (e.g., quarter #, 200#). I'm going to need to find $1500 US somewhere.

I know, it was just the excitement of the moment, of course we need drivers for nvidia or even latest Radeon cards.
>Of course, IF drivers can be created for those cards then we will have a nice machine. The only caveat is as DrBombCatcher pointed out, with only one PCI slot, and no onboard sound option, you'll be filling your only PCI slot with a soundcard.
You can buy PCI-E soundcards can't you? And obviously you'll need the drivers for it. Last edited by TheDaddy on 07-May-2007 at 08:49 PM.

One point though. Only ONE PCI slot?? is there going to be a riser card available? One is not enough if there is no on board Sound!
