To people who have purchased new (not used) big-box Amigas in the past, how much did you pay? I'm curious to know truely expensive this $1498 price is for the Amiga community.

As an example, I paid over US$3000 for an A4000T with 68040, no hard drive, no Zorro cards, no monitor during the Escom/Quikpak days. What about other people?

You cannot compare 1995 with 2007. Today you can grab a quite useful laptop for ~700 EUR at the next supermarket. In 1995 the situation was quite different.

Don`t talk nonsense about PCIe sound cards.

"Asus Xonar D2X uses a PCIe x1 connector, finally making use of all of the unused x1 slots on the motherboards of today and yesterday. Asus said the thing delivers 118dB Sound-to-Noise-Ratio during playback and 115dB SNR during recording. The sound card comes with certified Dolby Digital, Dolby Live, DTS Connect and DTS 5.1 standards."

Right now we can choose between Creative and Asus high quality cards. Perhaps some other too. But by the time this new Amiga should hit the streets there will be a lot more. So you shouldn`t worry about sound or any other hardware on this new Amiga. You should worry about having that Amiga at all. It wouldn`t be much of a surprise if this all turns out to be just another pointless hype.

If yes, can you demo it at a local show?
If not, when do you expect to have one?

Well if *you* do the design of the board from scratch adding a simple sound ship to the pci bridge isn't that difficult and expensive. If of course you grab a design and try to keep the modifications as minimal as possible, then adding sound (when the original design does not have it) is an issue.
Anyway, the sound integraton is rather a not too important issue. More important is the question whether we'll see that thing rolling out and beeing available in a not too distant future *and* running a n amaigish OS be it OS4, MOS or AROS taking full advantage of the PA6T capabilities.

But ignoring that for the moment:
1. What exactly is the point of a dual-core 64-bit system, when OS4 can't support either of those features for the foreseeable future?
2. Has the design of this mobo been started yet, or is it just wishful thinking at the moment?

This shows clearly that the board will run Linux (probably with AmigaDE) and nothing else.

The point is how the f***ing hell you are going to develop an SMP captable OS without a system with multiple CPU/core to port, test and debug it????

The point is that you get a system than even with one core you get a fast machine and in 1-2 years when AMIGAOS will have full SMP you will have an even faster machine, compare this with a PC that with the time your system is slower (due to OSs become more bloated and force you to upgrade because new apps need new versions of the OS).And be sure that linux also (and not only) would run in this new Amiga

DrBombcrater was right about the technical problems with creating PCIe versions of sound cards, but new bridge chips such as this offer a solution.

I think Adam has been hinting that the Amiga isn't the only target market for the boards he's creating (in reference to back-up plans etc.)

Even if OS4 can't initially use the full power of the chip I'm sure it will be worked on to add full support in future OS revisions. The 1682M is able to compete with the G4 on cost and deliver superior performance, even when utilising a single core.

One question for Adam:

Do you actually have a signed license or contract with Amiga.inc which allows you to ship either of the two boards announced with Amiga OS 4?

Do you have actually the signed piece of paper? Not a promise, or an understanding, or an unsigned preliminary contract ("we'll sign it when we win the courtcase"), but a signed contract giving you license to distribute AmigaOS 4 with these two boards?
