Software News   Software News : Release of fpga.resource AmigaOS 4.1 component for Sam460ex
   posted by elwood on 3-Jun-2011 21:19:40 (8082 reads)
ACube Systems announces the immediate release of the fpga.resource. This is an OS4 component that provides access to the I/O expansion bus found on the Sam460ex boards.

There are 80 I/O pins on the J22 connector, organized as 5 banks (each bank with 16 I/O pins) or as 80 single pins.

The archive contains both documentation and example source codes.

Check the documentation which comes with this executable for the pin-out layout.

Get the archive (soon on OS4depot): fpga_res-53.1.lha

For technical guys we would like to remember there is also an I2C resource on OS4depot. Check i2c.resource.lha

@centaurz
There is no IRQ, so you will need to read the data whit interval, depending on your requirements, it can eat a lot of CPU cycles, if it has to be often.
The best usage for this is slow stuff parallel port / floppy controller / joystick ports

Would be really cool if you could run Amiga floppies. Would make it so much easier converting your old Amiga software over. Would also be cool if you could boot from an Amiga floppy and run a game old style - but I suppose that is asking too much. Unless you could do a warm reboot unto UAE.

If we need to voice support for Sam440 FPGA, consider my vote voiced. :)

The Sam440ep FPGA firmware doesn't have the GPIO controller implemented.

But the entire point of having an FPGA in the first place is to be able to reprogram it at runtime as needed, right? Wouldn't it be much better to have the fpga.resource handle programming of the FPGA, taking care of any reserved areas and functions (i.e. lowlevel stuff required by the Sam itself), rather than only giving access to predefined functionality?

You make it sound like the Catweasel doesn't exist. :)

@Spirantho

It's not that Catweasel does not exist, its just that the Sam460 has only has one PCI slot, and it makes sense to use it for SATA cards, anyway for anyone whit Sam460 this might be fun project to do.

And in any case, I'd say it's better to use the USB floppy drive adaptor that someone is developing (don't remember the name, and don't know the status), it sounds like a "Catweasel killer" to me!

I think it's safe to say, that this fpga isn't the "silver bullet that will make Amiga (almost) most used computer once again", but of course that doesn't mean that some hackers can enjoy using it, and most definitely it doesn't mean there would be any harm having it onboard, even if you don't need it.
