Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Exclusive! Garry Hare to be Interviewed by AW team
posted by DaveyD on 21-Mar-2004 21:36:07 (16199 reads)
Below is an email from Garry Hare which I've quoted with his permission

Dear David,

Thank you for asking me to be interviewed by AmigaWorld. I understand your point that a few questions have come up over the last couple weeks. I will be more happy to try and answer them. Please let people know that there are likely a couple topics that I cannot discuss, details on current or pending legal issues among them. I can, if you like, comment on the legal strategy and process. But not on the specifics of the case. There are also many other topics where I simply don't know what I'm talking about. I'd like to avoid those as well. Everything else is fair and I will try to be direct and accurate.

With the following exception, KMOS does not publicly comment or speculate on product development in any way. The one exception, I've seen reference to a new product, OS 4.2, which was defined as Amiga DE + OS 4.0. There is no such product in development or contemplated. Should a commercial partner (customer) specify Amiga DE as part of their solution, we would be required to enter a licensing agreement with Tao Group and Amiga Inc., like anybody else.

Finally, the operating system developed, bundled and shipped through AmigaOne Partners will be named "Amiga OS 4.0".

I'm looking forward to seeing your questions.

Best Regards,

Garry Hare
KMOS, Inc.

I would like to know:

1. What is the intended direction of AmigaOS - will it be optimised for embedded systems, desktop applications or something else?
2. Are there any plans to get "key applications" on AmigaOS... I mean things like Mozilla, OpenOffice (or equivalents) as well as "web technologies" like Flash and RealPlayer.

Actually both of those probably fall under the "future products" thing, so I'm not sure they will be answered.

@KimmoK & Mikey_C

Let's keep this thread about the interview. What Pegasos users want or not can be discussed in the forums (or not).

Congratulations on the Garry Hare exclusive. I can't wait to hear what they have to say, I hope its a talk about generalities, their business model, strategies, where they fit into the big picture type of thing.

Firstly thanks to DaveyD and Garry for this interview

* I appreciate that you cannot give any information regarding future OS plans from KMOS - however can you state whether the original Amiga inc roadmap (OS4.0 - 5.0) has been dropped?

* Why was the deal not announced until almost a year after it took place?

The current legal battle is only an extension of the constant infighting this community has endured for some years now. This fighting is highly counter productive for both KMOS and Genesi and has damaged the market, possibly beyond repair.

Legal actions notwithstanding and while I always expect some competition, could you see yourself doing business with Genesi, or at least calling a truce?

Also, the combination of AmigaOS and MorphOS targeting the same small market means there is a danger of the two going in different directions splitting the market further and making life difficult for the few developers who may still be interested. As the owner of AmigaOS would you like to see co-operation between the groups to at least make life easier for developers?

I know "it takes two to tango" so to speak, I can't speak for Genesi on these points but what is your opinion?

I've read somewhere that Gary has some sound business experience, can anyone confirm this? If true, he could be the best thing that has ever happened to Amiga. Let Hyperion do the engineering and Gary balance the cheque book.

Here's my 2c:

1 - What is your company's vision?
2 - What markets do you intend to target?
3 - Have you considered publishing your business plan? After 10 years of failures, the Amiga community deserves to know whether you're capable of leading Amiga to success.

Can you put the "why do peg users want aos4" questions and responses on different thread. Im going to be mr nasty moderator and go up through the thread moderating it out because its a distraction in the middle of what are suppossed to be community questions for Garry Hare.

@ Gary Hare

I is my firm believe that to ensure AmigaOS4.x with future software/games a professional IDE is required, also manuals on how to code for AmigaOS, both refrence manuals and eductional is needed (could be PDF).

what will you plan to do to fill this need?

also the comunity really lack a powerful developer portal with all resources, tools and tutorial
gatherd to one place.

will we see this anytime soon?

oh btw:

Regards -a frustrated newbee Amiga programmer-

Question to Garry:
Will KMOS be putting effort in getting more AmigaOS4 compatible PPC motherboards ASAP?

Perhaps in co-operation with IBM.

************ FYI ***************

IBM looks for third party PowerPC mobo partners

CeBIT 2004 An interesting development

By Mike Magee at CeBIT Monday 22 March 2004, 11:27

FLUSHED BY its success with the Power PC processor, we were told by two mobo makers here at CeBIT that they'd been approached by IBM to consider possible designs supporting the Power PC platform.

We couldn't help getting that spooky deja entendu feeling.

Older hands will no doubt remember that when Motorola was a part of the PowerPC consortium, it tried a little experiment to create third party motherboards pushed through its distributor channel.

Indeed, that was the time when Hector Ruiz, now CEO of AMD, was presiding over its Power PC division, if our memory serves us well.

But the problem then was that the motherboards were priced so high that distributors started moaning about Motorola and its pesky Power PC plans.

We wonder if Big Blue has learned those lessons from the past? We're sure it has - and it's unclear right now what it would do with a line of third party Power PC motherboards. But it's an intriguing prospect in the pipeline. µ

Ok my question(s):
1- Do you know anything about the Amiga history, and have you used Amigas in the past?
2- Generaly speaking, because you don't talk about future strategy, do you think AmigaOS will need any modifications at the inner design to serve your purpose?
3- Are you aware of the current Amiga cummunity ?
