Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Exclusive! Garry Hare to be Interviewed by AW team
posted by DaveyD on 21-Mar-2004 21:36:07 (16015 reads)
Below is an email from Garry Hare which I've quoted with his permission

Dear David,

Thank you for asking me to be interviewed by AmigaWorld. I understand your point that a few questions have come up over the last couple weeks. I will be more happy to try and answer them. Please let people know that there are likely a couple topics that I cannot discuss, details on current or pending legal issues among them. I can, if you like, comment on the legal strategy and process. But not on the specifics of the case. There are also many other topics where I simply don't know what I'm talking about. I'd like to avoid those as well. Everything else is fair and I will try to be direct and accurate.

With the following exception, KMOS does not publicly comment or speculate on product development in any way. The one exception, I've seen reference to a new product, OS 4.2, which was defined as Amiga DE + OS 4.0. There is no such product in development or contemplated. Should a commercial partner (customer) specify Amiga DE as part of their solution, we would be required to enter a licensing agreement with Tao Group and Amiga Inc., like anybody else.

Finally, the operating system developed, bundled and shipped through AmigaOne Partners will be named "Amiga OS 4.0".

I'm looking forward to seeing your questions.

Best Regards,

Garry Hare
KMOS, Inc.

I would like to say Gary to AW.
I realy do beleve that this thing, you buying AOS, is a very good thing.
I would like to know what made you make that move. Do you think you
can make profit with this product?
If you do that is a very good thing indeed becouse we have a history of companies
who bouth Amiga only to prolong the continuation of development.
I can't wait to read that interview,
exelent work DaveD.

Welcome Garry to the community!

Great work AW for being on top of things!

I have a question:

Will you show up at AmiGBG on April 3rd?

1) Are you just holding the OS until it finally dies off or are you expecting it to bring you returns before investing in it's continued development?

2) Are you willing to fund the development of a modern browser and office suite for AmigaOS? Looking for programmers who know the Amiga?

3) Even though you stated KMOS will not comment on the future, Hyperion have made statements in the past about upgrades to 4.0 and continued development of the OS onto 4.2 and beyond. Removing the DE from Amiga Inc. as part of those plans, will there be continued development of the OS? Will there be future versions of AmigaOS for the desktop or the handhelds we hear so much about; or both?

4) Where is KMOS' webpage? We know nothing about this new parent company.

5) Who the heck was Itec anyway? Do they have a webpage? We don't know anything about them either.

6) Marry-Ann or Ginger?

Ivan

You have to consider that Amiga restated their plans for Amiga DE and 4.x/5.0 a long time ago. They decided that DE would not make a great skeleton for future versions of the operating system, but that there would be an AmigaDE player that could be ported to the Amiga OS. The statements from KMOS do not necessarily change that; one cannot conclude from the above that an Amiga DE player couldn't be made for those who desire it. It seems to be more of a clarification, meant to help those who might have been confused by Genesi's rhetoric. The original plans for some sort of convergence in 5.0 are rather old, and the emergence of 5.0 seems too far ahead of us for any constructive contemplation.

Considering the history between Amiga Inc and Genesi/Thendic-France, what options will Pegasos users have with OS4?

Will there be a new contract between KMOS and Genesi to port AmigaOS4?

Exactly who is KMOS (the long and short of it)?

Where is the company based? Who are the recursive parent companies (if any)?

What are the goals in mind with the IP of AmigaOS?

What history does KMOS/Itec have in the computing industry?

Are there any intentions to take AmigaOS further away from the hardware, or will it continue locked via licensing (OS4 for Eyetech's AmigaOne, A1 Lite, and existing PPC Amigas)?

What is the time frame for the kmos.com web presence?

AW, could you tell Gary that some people here do believe that AmigaOS could become the best OS in the world. Of course, it's a long term job, but we are here to get the challenge...

Only Amiga Makes It Possible...

bye

In addition to all the questions mentioned above I would be interested in their "legal strategy and process" -- will they be exercising these against anyone soon??? And about those mysterious "business cards"... were they real or not? What's the full story on that?

Excellent news!

The burning questions that I have are:

1). Can you explain why the deal for the OS was done last April and we only just found out about it now?

2). Who were LTec and why did they own the OS first?

3). What are your plans for OS4 and beyond and how do you hope to achieve them?

4). When will you have a website?

5). Will Amiga Inc. still be putting OS details in the CAM and if so - why? Would it not be best to publish this information on a KMOS site?

6). Does Amiga Inc. have any hold still over the OS or is it all now the property of KMOS?

7). Over the years AInc. has announced 2 promotions for OS4 - one being the $50 off and the other being the 'Party Pack' offer. I am a customer of both of these products. Will KMOS be honouring the original deals or are they now null and void?

8). How closely will you be working with Hyperion over the production of OS4 and beyond?

Actually - my biggest question was 'what does KMOS stand for?' - but SlimJim beat me to it.

Message to Gary - I would like to wish you and KMOS all the very best for the future and hopefully we can finally see the release of OS4 and some real progress for a change!

I know were are not supposed to ask questions about future product development of KMOS but this is a question I'm sure the community really needs to know:

Do you currently have any plans for future versions of the OS and hardware for desktop use?

Also do you see the Amiga community, existing software base (eg games), and the Amiga name as assets or are you just interested in the OS or hardware?
