Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Public Release of MorphOS 3.8 Featuring Sam460 Support
   posted by ASiegel on 15-May-2015 10:55:23 (9649 reads)
The MorphOS development team is proud to announce the public release of MorphOS 3.8, which introduces support for ACube´s Sam460 series of mainboards and numerous Radeon graphics cards from AMD´s X1000 and HD series. In addition to various performance improvements related to the Quark kernel, Exec, 3D graphics and video playback, MorphOS 3.8 also adds the ability to use state-of-the-art 4K displays in their native resolution. For a more extensive overview of the included changes, please read our release notes.

As usual, existing MorphOS users can update to the latest release entirely for free. Sam460 owners who are interested to register MorphOS for their system will be able to do so for 49 EUR.

We strongly urge new users to carefully read our installation and troubleshooting guides before they attempt to install MorphOS for the first time. Existing users can upgrade via the familiar procedure but are encouraged to read the guides as well. MorphOS 3.8 is available for download in our files section.

Same quirk that existed with my Radeon HD 6570 with the AmigaOS 4.1 Radeon HD driver exists under MorphOS.No boot or display on DVI port. Had to use DVI to VGA adapter with MorphOS. Only gives a display of 800x600 like this. The newer AmigaOS 4.1 drivers work ok with DVI on this card.Linux also ok.

@Nicsoft

Uhm, SAM only has faster FSB and PCI-e but when its CPU is weak. You dont need extremely fast gfx cards to use OWB or GCC.

Put faster CPU to SAM and I could consider buying one to run MorphOS :) Higher clock and Altivec really make difference.

@kyle

may not affect all Radeon HD6570 models .
My OEM model was the only one that I heard of with this issue.

Is it possible installing MorphOS on SD and having so double boot with OS4.1 installed on the HD?

MorphOS can boot from SD so it should be possible. If you have an optical drive you could boot from CD image and install to SD.

Or does SAM/U-Boot support booting from USB memory stick?

Largest is 2GB USB memory stick. Not all models work though.

2 GB is enough but very small these days.

I dont know what is USB boot procedure for U-boot but I expect the boot process is similar to Macs (Open Firmware). Then format SD card and install MorphOS.

I think

The 2GB limit is not more valid with the new U-Boot 2015.a

I don't think RadeonHD is really supported yet, beyond some experimental and rather unusable frame-buffer only output with no 2D or 3D acceleration whatsoever? Maybe it should mostly be seen as a declaration of ambition at this point?

But I suppose it's good you are eager to help!

@TRIPOS

The Radeon HD6570 is supported.
My OEM Model seems to have a quirk. DVI optput gives a problem with MorphOS.
If I connect as VGA to DVI adpter them it works in 800x600 mode.
Had the Same problem with earlier AmigaOS 4.1 radeon HD driver versions but the problem is now gone in the newer version of the AmigaOS drivers.

If you have a chance and can boot to MorphOS please try to file a bug report.

Also my Radeon HD6570 Ultimate doesn't work

It displays fine until the Morphos boot screen, then the mouse pointer is showed well but all the images on screen are highly distorced, no way to understand what is showed.
I repeat, the mouse pointer is correctly displayed, but the rest of backgroung images on the screen aren't

And now? Waiting for the bugfix (MOS 3.9) or buying a new videocard?
