Hardware News   Hardware News : New PowerC Products for the Amiga 1200
   posted by Mikey_C on 23-Dec-2004 18:02:18 (22076 reads)
ACK Software Controls, Inc. is pleased to announce two new products for the Amiga 1200. The first product is a Freescale 8245 based CPU card clocked at 400 MHz.

The card will have a SODIMM slot for memory expansion and also includes a Silicon Images 680 IDE controller and a Radeon Mobility graphics chip. This CPU card will fit in standard A1200 cases, but a towered system is recommended.

The second product is a modular busboard and CPU combination for use with towered A1200 machines. The bus board features an AGP 1X slot and three PCI slots. Additional features of the busboard include two DDR DIMM slots for memory expansion, a Silicon Images 680 IDE controller, onboard USB and ethernet. The CPU card will initially be a 750CXe product, but other CPUs will be available.

Both products will ship with an OEM version ofOS4 and contain a version of U-Boot as the firmware. Products are presently in prototype form running Linux and will be available in Q1 2005.

Additional information will follow in the new year.

Sincerely,

Adam Kowalczyk

ACK Software Controls, Inc.

I'm sceptic. Never heard of any hardware made by this guy and it comes out only a few days after the Dragon announcement. Another AmiJoe?

Read who is Adam. Sceptics said that A1 and OS4 won't see the light of the day times ago

I don't get it. Why do you guys always ask for credentials? As you quote the Dragon, what about the SharkPPC? Another AmiJoe?

Why? Because we had lots of vapor allready. Shark is a joke, like AmiJoe or iWin, I don't think Dragon will be one too. It would be like a suicide for Elbox. We'll see in a few weeks.
BTW: AmiJoe did even work, didn't it? IIRC there was something running as demo on it :)

I really hope the new PPC-card will also be released, would be great to have OS4 on something faster then BPPC in A1200, but I wouldn't wonder if we read about a delay. And another one and so on. It happened many times in the Amiga-history.

I even allready read it's a conspiration by Hyperion :) They fear Dragon will cause less people buying OS4 so they announce new PPC to stop people buying Dragons. (yes, i LMAO too

I think everyone is entitled to be a bit of a skeptic, even now that things are happening, but this guy is on the OS4 Beta Tester team and they state that the prototype hardware is already running Linux, and is due out in the next Quarter. Hyperion has told us in the past that it's merely a month or so to get OS4 running on a new board, to that fits about right into the time frame. If it comes out on time, and is priced at a reasonable amount, then I will be getting one (the A3000 version).

Let's see what additional information becomes available in the next month. That's not too long to wait.

Getting one board to somehow work with Linux is quite a task, but....
- making sure that all parts work reliable
- indepth testing of the A1200-interface
- ordering and financing parts for a production run
- makeing sure that you can actually sell those boards
- producing tham in such a way that costs/unit stay within bounds
are gonna be allmost as hard.

Wouldn't be the 1st time that something easily went to the 1st point, but miserably failed on all the following.

Hmm - could this run standalone, totally independent of the A1200?

It could, yes.

Hej Trez

"It could, yes."

Do you mean like "in theory it could" or "it will be able to"?
And which one of the products where you talking about?

@Troels:

I mean the cpu board+bus board. And by "it should" I mean that Adam intends it to work like that.

@Trez

Sounds great, so it could actually be both an upgrade and a replacement for the XE series (if that really is discontinued).

The other board would also be interesting if it was able to run on its own, must have quite small form factor and low power needs, could be quite usefull in some custom projects

OS4 would need access to the roms to work, so you wouldn't be able to do much with the board by itself.

No, OS4 does not need the ROMs. The actual implementation for the classic machines require the ROM routines for the kickstart module loading, but then the OS runs completely on its own.
The kickstart module loading can be managed similarly like on A1, so afterall you don't need the content of the ROMs at all.

Cool

And Radeon Mobility? Does that mean there'll be a header for LVDS (laptop TFT interconnect) and/or TMDS (DVI signalling)? Because then we're talking potential unlike ALL other solutions

Oh, ant btw:

Now we're not only getting the AmiJoe we've been waiting for since 1997, we're finally getting the AmigaOne1200 we've been so disappointed about. New names, same basic ideas. Totally frigging awesome.

I'm not quite certain which I want the most, but if there was a possibility to use a laptop LVDS or TMDS TFT together with the desktop version then I'm getting an A1200 laptop for sure. I already have a couple of LP141XA LVDS TFTs from LG (those could also be used with an AGA Amiga and a small circuitboard pressed onto the graphics chip like with the internal scandoublers for A1200. I have the PCB design ready inside my head...).

The Ack board sounds promising but I have one question in mind: why?
I mean, the ack board seems like a complete new motherboard with pci/agp/ram etc.
Why can't it just run standalone? What does it need the Amiga for?
