Software News   Software News : First Screenshots of BarsnPipes for OS4
   posted by ssolie on 8-Nov-2005 20:25:16 (12396 reads)
The first important step with the porting of the MIDI sequencer BarsnPipes on Amiga OS 4 is achieved - the program starts. The author would like to show the two screenshots as evidence that a successful port is now very probable:

Screenshot2

The pictograms for the graphic user interface are loaded using datatypes i.e. they can be changed by the user.

@doc:

So u rather use a program with a beautiful gui that does nothing? The functionality always comes first

Did you also notice we have another OS4 developer joining the ranks and producing software? Alfred has already released ULarn on os4depot. He's made significant progress on B&P already as well. Hopefully he'll produce even more software. What do you think about that aspect of the news?

thats great news...

The image buttons in the tool bar are actually made by Mason...

That's right, as DaveAE said the icons and buttons for AE are by me

... and I also have Alfreds icons instructions (which are ver detailed and helpfull)since over a year, but the theme is very complex as there not just toolbar icons needed. I even have some GI toolbar icons ready.

It's very, very sad, but I had some other things to do...

The new official icons for os4?

You don't really expect him to answer that one, do you?

@Thread:
Anyway, you all seem to be focusing on the graphics, the icons etc. The first thing I noticed and felt as a bit of a let-down, was the use of bitmap fonts for all texts, numbers, labels etc. I think switching to a nice, clear antialiased font (or several) would go a long way towards making the layout less cluttered and easier to overview. Hopefully the program can use such fonts -- which AFAIR also implies that the screen has to be more than 8 bits deep. If not, lets hope those things are on the to-do list.

Best regards,

Niels

@nbache

Well why not first try to open B&P into a 32bit screen. Then fix the window
frames to standard colors. Make all font, background and such colors
configurable, with standard OS4 color scheme as default.
Then all gfx needs to be in 1:1 aspect not 2:1. Most used screenmodes today
are 1024x768, 1280,960 or 1600x1200. B&P was made for 640x256 or
1280x512. As of now they look really flat, and thus ugly.

I'm sure these changes aren't too big for a great coder like Alfred and they
would make for a great improvement IMHO.

The GUI is fine to me, I can read it. If I've got inspiration to record a new beautiful chord progression I don't care what the record button looks like! In the title it says "freeware" That's very kind, and I won't bitch about it for sure!

Good job! This program has been rated highly by just about everyone I knew who used it on the classics. I am biting my nails now to get my hands on a new Amiga with all this overdue audio software coming out.....

I like this program, it is very powerful. I am very happy to see it come to OS 4. I look forward to using it again.

Bars and Pipes is a classic in it's own right and a worthy addition to OS 4.

Many thanks to Alfred Faust for this port.

I couldn't have put it better myself - doesn't need to be massive improvements IMO - just brought upto date slightly for a more OS4 feel. A touch of class if you will

Hehe yes, and if Alfred makes B&P open in a 32bit screen PNG icons
might be a possibility in the future.. Could make for a even easier to
use UI as the images becomes clearer.

I agree that it doesnt look that great, but the hard work was porting it. Fixing up the GUI afterwards will be easy.
