Hardware News   Hardware News : Sam460ex available with AmigaOS 4.1
   posted by elwood on 27-Jan-2011 23:00:06 (25492 reads)
Bassano del Grappa, Italy - 27 Jan, 2011

ACube Systems Srl is pleased to announce the immediate release of Hyperion's AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 for Sam460ex. Boards and installation CDs are now shipping to resellers.

The board is running at 1.15 Ghz and allows all Amigans to use modern graphic cards thanks to its PCI express slot.
Other features include: 7 USB ports and Gigabit ethernet.

The board is available at a suggested price of 749,00 EUR (including AmigaOS 4.1).
Price excludes local taxes and shipping costs.
Sam460ex AmigaOS 4.1 version:

The version of AmigaOS 4 that will be shipped with the Sam460ex is still to be considered beta. It is made from AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 on which specific components for Sam460ex were added.
You will still have a valid AmigaOS 4 licence that allows you to download the next AmigaOS update when it will be available from Hyperion Entertainment.
Notes about the AmigaOS 4.1 CD currently shipping with Sam460ex

Currently RadeonHD driver supports the following chipsets with full 2D hardware acceleration and DDC:

* R500 (with compositing support) - Radeon X1550, X1650, X1950 and others
* R600 - Radeon HD 2400 - HD 3450 - HD 3650 and others
* R700 - Radeon HD 4350 - HD 4650

The audio driver will be released on OS4depot as soon as it is ready.

The driver for the onboard SATA port is still experimental. It is not loaded by the kicklayout file but you still can use it (at your own risk). It is located in Devs: and you can use it through Mounter.

The final version will be released with an OS update. In the meantime we suggest to use a Silicon Image 3512 PCI card or an USB-SATA combo PCI card with a Silicon Image chip.

Please read the manual for more information on the board.

It was a very long road and we wish to thank everyone for your patience and support.

Still all the testers in the silence, will ask it again:

plz, can some of you say, if it possible to use in sam460:

New modern PCI-e RadeonHD + SATA HDD + SATA DVDROM at one time ? I.e. can i just plug all of this at one time, just boot from CD , and install stuff ?

@kas1e

From the my concerns about..... thread

The Sam460ex has an integrated SD card reader. It can be used to boot the system.
If you prepare a SD card (formatting with SFS and installing SLB like you would do for an hard disk) you can install AmigaOS 4 on it and use the card as boot device.

If you copy the Installation CD content over the SD you can use the card to install the system on the hard disk.

From the sata controller thread...

My Sam460 setup is like this. I still have 1 on-board SATA free..

Sam460ex + 2GB RAM + RadeonHD PCI-Express 4650 1GB 128bit + Sil3512 PCI SATA Card + Sata HD + Sata DVD

You can also use Sil3114 (4 port) PCI card..

Think this answers your question?

@Antique
Staff about SD card sounds a bit messy for me (i do not want to boo from it at all, becasue it will be slow for sure).

I just hope it can be possible, just plug on sata hdd + sata dvd + radeon pci-e at one time, then boot from amigaoscd , and install the system.

But looks like i should buy also Sil3512 PCI SATA Card (or kind) to make all as i want. And then (as i understand) i can't use plain PCI slot (for putting new-audio card in it) , right ?

@kas1e

You need to use a SATA PCI Card (or a PATA card if you prefer).

When the final version of the internal sata2 interface will be released you will be able to plug an hard disk on that port and use USB (or the internal SD Card reader) as boot device. My setup is this:

1) PCI-e 16x ----> Radeon X1650pro
2) PCI-sot ----> Silicon Image 3512 SATA Card (2 ports (Hard Disk and DVD-ROM)
3) PCI1x ---> currently disabled because of point 4
4) Internal SATA2 ----> Hard disk used for testing the driver

I can boot from the following sources:
PCI SATA HD
PCI SATA DVD
external USB devices
internal SD Card Reader
Network (I use it for upgrading firmware trough tftp but it can be used to load kickstart from remote server)

Yes,with the sata controller you can do what you want. The one you mention is the recomended one from acube,and will fill your needs. The pci slot depends on the sata controller,if it is a pci-e controller then you can still use the last pci slot for example the sound card or soemthing else. Not sure if there are pci-e soundcards that could be used if the sata is pci.

On the contrary. Some betatesters reported that booting from SD Card is faster than booting from CD.

@Lecta,Antique

Aha ok, thanks. So SATA card are need it for make all is fine.

@lecta
About loading from usb or using usb-hdd its good only for betatesters, because they have usb2.0, while end users stack with 1.1 => it will be slow hdd.

In others all is fine then. Btw, can you please do that tests ?

OK - let's be a bit more specific...

HD4350 PCI in a Sam440 vs AmigaOne/XE vs Sam460ex

Sample tests for each box with same card.

And then for the fun of it...
Fastest card you have on 460ex vs. fastest card for Sam440/AmigaOne XE

A quake time demo or something else anyone can try out.

And if too much hassle or things are still in flux don't worry about it.

Most interesting to me would be fastest card on a Sam440/A1-XE vs fastest card on a Sam460ex.

Thanks

Sorry, it's still in a state of flux. I am writing my own benchmark tool, but it's not finished. All I can say at this stage is that it is an improvement over my Radeon 9000 pro, which itself leaves those 9250s that are so popular in the dust. The time for benchmarks will come later.

Hans

I was talking about booting media for the purpose of installing the OS. Anyway, the speed I was referring to was with USB 1.1

For the tests, I'll do them as soon as I can, but I'm a bit busy right now

I made a minor update to that page this morning. It was originally written a few weeks ago.

No need to worry unless you want to connect your computers directly to your provider's lane. Normally all you need is an IP6 capable router and set up an IP4 subnet for your home network.

as Zylesea wrote, no need to worry.

A broadband divider or a real router is the answer.
And as a bonus, you get a hardware based firewall.

Maybe you missed this news item:

http://acube-systems.biz/index.php?page=news&id=69

And other than that... the kernel is different for each supported platform so it must be adapted specifically for Sam460ex and that's something that can only be done by Hyperion if you want to sell it.

AFAICT, the kernel is the same for all the G3/G4 based Eyetech AmigaOne models. So considering that the AMCC460 core is virtually identical to the AMCC440 core, I am not convinced that kernel modifications should be necessary.

What *would* almost certainly be different is the code needed to set up the interfaces between the SoC and the rest of the world on bootup. But *that* is done by UBoot, which Acube is handling themselves. Once set up, the 460 might very well look identical to a 440 from a software point of view.

The other difference, of course, is related to the various new peripherals. Which is where drivers come in. Drivers, however, also do not need to come from Hyperion --- that's the whole point of having a separation between the code that implements the OS-side logic and the code that interfaces with actual hardware.

Quote:
Anyway it is stored inside the Devs: drawer and users can load it manually using the "mounter" utility. This will obviously change in the future.

The user might find themselves in a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation, however. In a system with a single hard drive attached to the internal SATA connector, where would you load it manually *from*? The whole point of the kicklayout system is to use the UBoot services to load drivers.

Quote:
Are you implying that ACube Systems is willing to commit an act of piracy by selling AmigaOS4 WITHOUT Hyperion's licence?

Of course not. Acube is the official distributor for OS4. However, I *am* wondering whether they are "simply" selling the Sam460 as a variant of the Sam440, with what a year ago we would have called a "Sam440 OS4 license". Nothing sinister or nefarious about that, and most certainly no piracy.

I was wondering if it is possible to use the Sam460 with onboard graphics until I locate one of the recommended Radeon graphics cards.

Yes, you can use the Sam460 with the on-board graphics card. It comes with the necessary AmigaOS 4.1 drivers.

There are at least 2 technical reasons why the 440 kernel cannot work on the 460ex SoC:

- the core used on the 460ex (440H6) has 36-bit physical addresses (none of the previous AOS4 kernels supported 36-bit)
- the Interrupt Controller is different

Without modifications to support those two features the old 440 kernel doesn't work at all on the 460ex.
