Not in as many words... what he did say is:

Quote:
We look forwards to releasing the pre-release sometime in the new year, closely followed by the real thing.

Which sounds pretty close to it will be released in 2004.

Anyway, OS4 for '04. It's not as far away now as it once was.

Hmm, I didn't even see the last two questions, I think the entire page couldn't have been uploaded when I viewed it (before this news item was posted).

Anyway, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Fleecy and Amiga Inc, the OS4 developers and Hyperion, and the rest of the Amiga Community.

Here's to OS4 in the new year.

Chris

Well, well........sounds like we'll first see the beta in a couple of months.......and the final product 4-6 months later......could be wrong though (but taking in mind the earlier timescales of A.inc. I bet I'm not)

My best guess is official OS4 release at august-september 2004.

At that time I'll be a resident in a psyciatric hospital.....banging my head against the wall mumbling "they promised 2001........they promised 2002.......they promised 2003"

Hope I'm wrong.....

@ Hondo_DK.

Actually it's not OS4 thats delaying the prerelease this time from what I've heard!

Should be coming soon enough in January, imho!

If you want to consider that as a promise, be my guest!

Sorry to hear Thomas won't be celebrating christmas like he should!

Merry Christmas anyway to Thomas and all at Hyperion, Eyetech and Amiga Inc.

Considering it is a pre-release of OS4, what else can delay it other than OS4 itself?

Chris

No, it doesn't. It was a close call, it just didn't make it for christmas.

Speculation.

No one promised. I repeat again, we promised to do whatever we can, but that is it. Under the given circumstances, it just didn't work out.

Among other things, the firmware.

Booting OS 4 requires an updated firmware. We've since upgraded to U-Boot 1.0.0 (the latest official build), and it works for almost all of us but there had been issues. Hard to track issues. In one case the machine does crash immediately after bootup, in other cases it ran for a few hours and then started to behave strangely.

We're tracking this right now; it might have been dismissed if it had been on only one machine, but it wasn't. We can't give out a firmware update if we're not sure it will work, and OS 4 will require the new firmware, so it's a chicken-and-egg situation.

There where other things as well that didn't get finished, also because the firmware issue took so long.

Nothing, it's just that things need to be sorted out. The firmware issue is taking time to fix.
