Events   Events : New York AmigaOne & Micro A1 demo report
posted by Russ on 28-Dec-2003 0:37:07 (7569 reads)
At the 3rd annual LICA Christmas pizza party on Dec 19th, board members Kurt Grach and Russ 'Mr. Hardware Computers' Norrby presented not only the fully functional AmigaOne but the first showing of the MicroA1 (aka AmigaOne Lite) motherboard which Santa had delivered to Russ just the day before the meeting.

The numerous attendees included not only our tireless regulars, but 'retired' members of the club and even several 'first-timers' (including visitors from MA.!), all of whom were coaxed out into the cold to see the first new Amiga in over a decade. Just over 6 inches long, the Micro A1 Beta motherboard was a very clean in design. Next month Russ plans to show it running OS4 in a new custom case that they are designing.

With a 19" LCD monitor sitting between his fully-loaded, custom Towered A1200 and the AmigaOne to which it was networked, Kurt loaded the ROM image from the A1200 to the A1 and - like the magic of the Rockefeller Center tree lighting - OS4.0 came up on the screen, running on the A1. Numerous features of the new OS were highlighted, and then even more magically, several 'legacy' software titles (previously installed on the A1 HD) including AmigaWriter, FinalWriter97, FX Scan, Art Dept Pro, Ibrowse and Simple Mail were flawlessly loaded and run. It was a great showing, both by Russ & Kurt for getting the presentation together, and by the current and 'old' loyalists who turned out to see it. Thanks to all! The MicroA1 has a ITX form factor and will therefore fit into any suitable ITX case with a 300W or higher PSU

say what?... even my loaded P4system, don't draw more than a 100Watt from the wall plug. why would a PPC system need this much power!..

And, most Micro-ITX cases only have a sub 200watt supply is this a simply typo? or some misconseption.

Will the MicroAmigaOne have another Firmware ... U-Boot is not Open firmware-compatible ... And I would beleave that the MicroAmigaOne also is going to have U-Boot

Maybe it's a version of UBoot that has an OF compatilbilty mode?

The used form factor is called "Mini-ITX" and the Bios ROM used will most likely be UBoot. The "Open firmware-compatible BIOS with OS4.0 extensions & NV memory" part just seems to be a copy&paste from ancient AmigaOne specifications.

Also the final version should come with USB2.0 according to Alan Redhouse.

Thought of the "cut/past" thing

I'm already in the begining phase of designing my own MicroAmigaOne case

PSU and wall-plug aren't the same thing, LaBodilson. I think it unlikely the PSU of your P4 system is rated at only 100w.

TBH, I know it's impossible

And for the other guy, whose alias I can't remember, of course the Lite uses U-Boot. The Friedens haven't sweated blood over it for months just to use it on ONE measly mobo. Arbeit macht Frieden, and then some.

PS I hate Ron, I wasn't allowed to play with the Lite I had for display at Alchimie 3

Hum.. its says that their taking pre-orders???

I'm going to e-mail and see if they have an estimate in regards to price, or if they are just being a little premature.

Yes, please keep us posted. I'm just about to order an earlybird A1 (on the assumption that the Lite is only coming out in May/June), if it's going to be more like Feb/March I could wait a bit more.

Yeah, I thought about emailing them too. Just let us know what you find out. That will keep them from having to answer the same email question 1000 times. I really want the full A1 with AGP, but that mini-ITX board is so interesting to me for some reason. I think because it's so small.

Well no, it's a 300watt like most else , but i have build P4 systems with as little as 160watt's PSU's. and know that most Mini-ITX cases only comes with a sub 200watt PSU.

A computer don't use 300watt just because it's mounted with a 300watt PSU.

Typo error on that. You can probably use a 60watt or greater power supply. P4 systems require bare minimum 250 watts to barely run. The processor alone uses 90watts a decent graphics card can use up to 70watts. must have nothing in it to only require 100watts.

After having watched Alan Redhouse' speech from the Bath OS4 on tour show, I got the impression that the A1LITE (or what it's called atm.) is still (many) months away

Interesting video btw!

I will probably buy a A1 by the end of january unless theres any news about the release date of the LITE model before that date.

Would be nice to get an expected release date from Eyetech but I guess we won't see it before OS4 is in a more polished and mature state.

3rd Annual?????????
LICA Has been around pretty much since the Amiga been around and has been at it's current location since I think 1999. Was at the VFW post for at least ten years prior so some typos have been made. Also There is some outdated information in Russ's posting that have been pointed out to Russ and should be corrected shortly. Also remember the A1 mini like it's name is has been going through some revisions.

Kurt

PS not mentioned in the posting was the fact that the hard drive in the demo was set up on my A1200 and was just a mirror copy of my A1200 hard drive that I updated to OS4.0 and stuck into the A1 for the demo. Reboots are counted in seconds very nice. If your programs run on graphics card with P96 they should run in OS4.0 haven't tried many games yet since I don't currently have alot installed on my A1200.

One of the mayor benefits with going small form factor and PPC is suposed to
be less heat, and a bigger PSU will generate more heat, even if it only has
to handle a small load when compared to a small PSU with the same load.

So it is either a typo, or something isn't just right with the design of the board.

One possibilty would be that it draws to much current on an odd voltage.

For example, I got a very very early ATX-PSU in front of me, rated 250W
(max. output 130W), which will only deliver 0.3Ampere on -5V and 1 Ampere
on -12V. Could be that something needs relativly high currents on a negative
voltage, while the overall load would still be quite low.

My take on this is that the board just has to be made ready to work with this:
http://www7.alternate.de/html/nodes_info/tn1v04.html

Or atleast this:
http://www7.alternate.de/html/nodes_info/tn1v02.html

To make sense, since these are the PSUs that fit in ITX-cases, and these are
the PSUs that have a power-input reasonable for low-heat tasks.

(sorry for the german links, but tech-specs should be clear).

a litle quote from http://mini-itx.com/faq.asp#Hardware0
Quote:
A Mini-ITX PSU is less than 100 Watts.

Hej Lasse du har ret i at mini-itx PSU'en er sat til mindre end 200W ... ifølge www.mini-itx.com er PSU'erne max 100W ... men kan selvfølgelig også bruge større ...

Hi Kronos ... If you want one, I could make an Avatar for you

Just send an email to hnl_dk@amiga.org write what you want on it ... send some pictures you would want me to use, and I will Morph an Avatar for you

Replying in English here

Some caution should be taken on that advide, since the A1-ATX has been known to have trouble caused by too powerfull PSU:s.
It seems P4-PSU:s mainly.
Guess that will be tested when the A1-ITX is shipping.

@Everybody regarding the 300watt missprint

Have a look at these pictures..
bath pic
Bath pic 2

I doubt those tiny PSU's are 300W.

Furthermore, Alan has repeatedly stated that the main sellingpoint for the mini-itx A1 is low power consumption. Surely even the bluest of trolls can't think that he's so incompetent that he would be satisfied with a 300W PSU requirement?

Now stop reading 3rd party writeups as if they were the gospel.

Trivial point to be made: yes, the LICA group has been around since the Amiga's inception - but take it from me as group president, that WAS the group's 3rd annual Christmas pizza party, as stated.
