I hope that 160MB all goes to good use. That's more than Win95/98 uses!

Well, that drive does seem to have a few extra directories which you don't always see. eg "Graphics" and "Graphic Demos" also possibly a few others

mr2: and how do u know its ONLY SYS: on that disk? , for all u know it might have 100 megs of games and gcc on it (thats a total of 160 megs)..

just pointing out that that IN USE number tell us nothing as long as we dont know whats on it.

pps:cad files on win 98 is 111 megs iirc , and thats not copied to hdd even! (why u need to either copy em manually to hdd or insert cd everytime u install a network card etc) so what i am saying , windows 98 is BIGGER than 160 megs fully installed!

cheers

Well, I'm sold. That just rocks. I'm jealous of all you peeps with A1s. I'm just gonna have to go out and buy one now.

As sad as it sounds, I'm more happy to see Hyperion develop Amiga OS, than I am Amiga Inc. Screw 5.0! 4.0 is just looking better and better.

That's my first comment

Secondly, there's (Still) a lot of talk about the icons (Bless) We'd all be happy to see PowerIcons ported by the sounds of it. Even Hyperion.

Here's a grab of the icon package you can see (The package with the leopard icon) in the shots, I doubt many icons will break the individual 256 colour limit alone but the alpha channel adds that certain finishing touch.

Also bear in mind everyone, the PNG icons out there are very geared towards Linux. Now if Mason could... No! Leave it there. I'm sure Mason is aware of future prospects

Also also, I read somewhere that there's a version of PNGs (Ish) that is to PNG images, as GIF anims are to a GIF images. Now there's a thought, two, maybe even more, frame icons. Lush!

Until then I'd like to add...

Thanks for the updates

though...ermm lol...ugh... my sys: is near 1gb :) (email, ineternet tools ,diff progs and apps etc) .

@Toaks;
BIG system? Nooo, I don't want to!
I prefer a small one-faster, more handy.

@samo79:
You can see one icon converted from PNG to 256 colours (shot1, Workbench4.0 icon).
It looks cool. Maybe new set of Mason icons will use 256 colours too.

It is looking great at the moment!

How is graphics.library at the moment - that was the last major issue IIRC - fully PowerPC code now?

Mmmm, I would like to see SVG icon support for upcoming versions. SVG is a vector format, and therefore perfectly scalable, and there are a few icon sets already in existence that use it (e.g., Crystal and BlueSphere Icons) and look great. Being vector, they are smaller in size than a 32-bit icons as well, although you need a bit more horsepower to render them than a 32-bit icon!

Erk, just trying to change some icons on Windows XP, and it is near impossible! Here are the instructions for changing the "My Computer" Icon:

Quote:
To change "My computer" icon, browse into key

HKey_classes_root\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon

And set String name "(Default)" to your own icon path. e.g. "c:\Windows\Jack.ico,0" if you want to make Jack.ico in c:\Windows to be an icon of "My computer". Don't forget to add ",0" after icon path to tell Windows to use icon number 0 in this icon file.

Ridiculous!

Edit: oh, there is an easier way, phew!

Wow!

That's a lot of comments made in a short period of time.
Guess which community is about to burst with anticipation?

Those are some mighty cool'ish screenshots.
Guess why said community is on the verge of bursting?

I gather this'll keep us all preoccupied for a day or two, at least. Maybe next time they ought to release the screenshots as image maps, allowing us to "minimize" or "activate" certain windows/icons. That ought to keep us busy for weeks!

Seriously, it's looking good. It's looking good!

I just want it all the much more now!

Great screenshots! Great work! And a huge to any and all involved!

@samo79

Cheers, nice as it looks though, it's only the icons that make it so. Everything else is plain old AmigaOS 3.9

Here's an updated pic using the same icon set which you can download from here. I don't know how long I'll keep the grab up but if the link is dead (Weeks/months from now & you wanna see it again, PM me)

It's probably not worth requesting slinky sets of PNG icons on the final OS4 CD as we don't yet actually have PNG icon support but it's worth checking this archive out if/when we do.

@Rogue... Or anyone else that can tell me,

Is the transparent background for AmiDock real time transparency? I saw an earlier OS4 & it was an image created once AmiDock was inialized meaning it 'looked' transparent, but when you moved a window behind it, you could see it wasn't "real". If you get me.

Hope that makes some sense.

I take it the default look is the purple background with blue and grey window bars?

That would have been a quite old revision of the default look, but yes, that (and this) is the default look. (The purple is fully blue these days.) But don't read too much into the choice of default screen backdrop used at this stage.

The blue and grey window borders, screen titlebar, etc., are all much the same as they have been since the very first designs were conceived. It has been a process of very small incremental adjustments, taking it to the stage it is at now. Just a one pixel shift here, a slight colour intensity change there, etc. Judging from these screenshots, I'd say that this is just one revision behind the current version. (The checkmark images are slightly smaller now, for example.)

Will it be possible to replace gadgets/images(closebutton, etc) with custom drawn images?

Just about every part of what you see here can be replaced/changed. The new preferences system is pretty extensive. We've been slightly reluctant to release screenshots showing alternative themes because it generally causes confusion; with people not knowing which version of the OS they are looking at. Of course, all Amiga users know how configurable our OS can be, and expect and understand all manner of different looks. But in the wider world, mainstream press, etc., it is important to provide a consistent visual presence. When we get some spare time, I'd like to show off the new GUI with some less-conservative themes.

Regarding changing/replacing gadgets images, the new OS provides plenty of support for new designs. Each gadget image seen on screen is the result of a number of specific layers combined to create the final look. There's the basic image data layer plus 1-bit mask map, of course. Then there is also optional support for alpha maps, shadow maps, highlight maps and ghosting maps. These can all be used in lots of interesting combinations.
