Software News   Software News : New Jamiga Version (alpha 0.0.2)
   posted by Eric_S on 20-Feb-2004 10:49:37 (2610 reads)
Alpha 0.0.2 of Jamiga brings in JIT and JNetworking...

*** JIT ***
JIT now also works on "real world" 68040/68060 Amigas

*** NETWORKING ***
Networking has been implemented (again)

Don't throw Tomcat at it just yet, JAmiga still lacks the required classloading mechanism, but some included small classes work well here.
Try for example

JAmiga TestSocket www.yourdomain.com

it should return the content of the webserver root file on www.yourdomain.com

Networking currently does NOT support UDP Sockets and the NetworkInterface class! Using these will throw exceptions

*** BUG FIXES ***
* The JIT Problem has been fixed (see above)

* An ugly bug in the UTF8 - UTF16 conversion has been fixed which was the reason for many memory-problems

*Networking now works in connection with multiple threads
Try JAmiga TestServerSocket 10000 5
This will wait until 5 clients have connected to the local port 10000

*** AWT ***
very little has been done on AWT, but the TestFrame class now Resizes the open window

Even thow we're far away from a working product I have to say this: GREAT JOB! This is a product we need on the Amiga. It would be nice if developers could concentrate on an OS4.0 version as soon as it moves from beta to production state. With a Java environment on the Amiga commercial software could run easily on it.
I will start working on two big commercial products in Java. It would be nice if I could switch from Linux to Amiga to make them run.
Go on! Who knows, maybe I will join the developers group as soon as I will get an AmigaOne with OS4.0.

GREAT GO'ING GUYS!

I don't know what the Java situation is like on the Amiga. I thought it would have been included with the OS4? Is it "just" a case of porting the Linux version? Java is a must as it opens up a whole range of software for a platform that badly needs all the software it can get.

Reading through the past Q&As, Personal Java/J2ME functionality will be added to AmigaOS as soon as the DE is ported - ie certainly not for OS4.0.

The Linux version is closed source freeware. Only Sun Microsystems can port the original "Java" product to new platforms.

For platforms other than Solaris, Windows, and Linux, there are compatible virtual machines written by the vendor. In the case of AmigaOS it is being built on top of the AmigaDE virtual machine.

For the classic machines there will be Jamiga.

I do believe that Sun are at least collaborating with either Amiga or Tao, according to my info, which is admittedly about 2 years out of date in this area. Fleecy ? Bill ? Alan ?

Surely JAmiga is based on Kaffe or sablevm?

Surely JAmiga isn't a whole new Java implementation from scratch (?!)

(EDIT) Wow... looks like it is indeedy! (/EDIT)

Which Java VM? There are many others apart from Sun's JRE. There is an IBM one (also proprietry/closed source), and also a couple of competing community FOSS ones like Kaffe and SableVM.

In fact, Kaffe has been ported to the Amiga, and also boasts the following on their ports page:
GNU: (many) Linux and BSD distros, Hurd
*nix: NeXTStep, Solaris, SunOS, BSDi, Tenon Mach Ten BSD (for Macintosh), IRIX, HP/UX, AIX, Univel SVR4, OSF, Fujitsu UXP/DS, DGUX, MP/RAS
MS: Windows, Windows CE, KaffeCE, DOS
Embedded: eCOS, VxWorks, pSOS, ThreadX, SMX, Nucleus, RTEMS
Proprietry: AtheOS, BeOS, AmigaOS, MiNT
Other: FreeMiNT, Plan9, KaffeOS / OSKit

Other OSS VMs: Kaffe, LaTTe, Open Runtime Platform, Blackdown JDK for Linux, kissme, SableVM, Japhar, CACAO.
Other OSS JIT compilers: OpenJit, TYA, shuJIT, ElectricalFire, Briki

But I see at kaffe's own list they mention JAmiga!

Kaffe's list of other free JVMs include (trying not to replicate above):
gcj, Jikes, Waba, joeq, Wonka, JamVM, Jupiter, IKVM, Aegis VM, JAOS, Dynamic Java, Palava, Ghost Machine, JNode... and JAmiga

At The JAmiga SF.net site:

Summary: Mac OSX Version available

Today we have uploaded an initial "sneak preview" of JAmiga compiled on a Mac. The first Version is packaged under 0.0.0.0.1 but still lacks a lot of features already available in the Amiga-Packages of that version. However, it already features GNU classpath 0.06 which will soon be ported to the Amiga-versions as well.
Also, the Mac Version does not yet feature a JIT engine yet which is to follow soon (and will then subsequently ported to AmigaOS 4 and MOS).

Cool! That was in '98? I wonder what the article says... it links to here.
