Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Exclusive! Garry Hare to be Interviewed by AW team
posted by DaveyD on 21-Mar-2004 21:36:07 (16197 reads)
Below is an email from Garry Hare which I've quoted with his permission

Dear David,

Thank you for asking me to be interviewed by AmigaWorld. I understand your point that a few questions have come up over the last couple weeks. I will be more happy to try and answer them. Please let people know that there are likely a couple topics that I cannot discuss, details on current or pending legal issues among them. I can, if you like, comment on the legal strategy and process. But not on the specifics of the case. There are also many other topics where I simply don't know what I'm talking about. I'd like to avoid those as well. Everything else is fair and I will try to be direct and accurate.

With the following exception, KMOS does not publicly comment or speculate on product development in any way. The one exception, I've seen reference to a new product, OS 4.2, which was defined as Amiga DE + OS 4.0. There is no such product in development or contemplated. Should a commercial partner (customer) specify Amiga DE as part of their solution, we would be required to enter a licensing agreement with Tao Group and Amiga Inc., like anybody else.

Finally, the operating system developed, bundled and shipped through AmigaOne Partners will be named "Amiga OS 4.0".

I'm looking forward to seeing your questions.

Best Regards,

Garry Hare
KMOS, Inc.

??? The thread vanished and came back? (and took my post with it )

Is this going to be a "regular" interview, or an "ask Garry" sort of thing?

My reply got lost in the move from forum to news too!

Lucky I still had it on display in another window, I said...

Great stuff, I look forward to reading the interview.

I would be especially interested in finding out what his motivation is in entering the Amiga arena, and what sort of company KMOS is.

Are you going to open a topic for questions to be put forward, or are you goinng to draw questions from the recent discussions?

I had best hold onto a copy of that message unless it disappears again

I would be interested in what "KMOS" actually stands for...

Furthermore, some answers on the curious "CEO of Amiga.Inc" business cards over which
there where so much fuzz about.

But most importantly, I would like to hear the motivations for a "new" company (and its CEO)
to be stepping into the Amiga market at this point in time.

@DaveyD

More than 10 questions will be submitted this time around, eh? Otherwise, we demand there be more questions answered a couple o' weeks from now!!

So, when's the deadline for submitting questions? (I suppose you'll be accepting questions from members, no?) And how do we go about it? A new thread in an appropriate forum, right here in this news post, or through e-mail to you guys?

Guys.

Note the part about "we will not be announcing ANY future announcement" IMHO a breath of fresh air.. I loved the old CBM secrecy.... seriously....

lets have some professionalism back into the Amy market.... mind you the jurys out still.

Well done AW! Here are some things I'd like to know (I've tried to avoid questions regarding product development):

1. What kind of company are KMOS? Do they have any previous connection to the Amiga platform?
2. Why did they buy AmigaOS? What are their plans for it?
3. What's their stance on the entire Genesi/MOS/lawsuit affair?
4. How will they be communicating with the Amiga community? We've had long stretches of silence, we've had bi-weekly QA sessions...what can we expect from KMOS?
5. What are their relationship with Amiga Inc? Will there be cooperation in the future? It feels somewhat strange to have AmigaOS owned by one company, and the Amiga brand name by another.

Hope I'm making some kind of sense. Off to get some sleep now.

Kay

Thanks for making it possible to ask some questions.

1. You are speaking of "AmigaONE Partners" (plural) - does that mean
that you are in contact with other hardware producers/resellers than
mai/eyetech? A cheaper and more modern board would be really important
to get more people from "outside" interested in AmigaOS4.

2. What is your strategy to get more developers on board? There are
still quite a few key-applications missing like a decent Browser and
an Officesuite.

3. What are the markets you are aiming at with AmigaOS in the short,
middle and long term?

4. Does KMOS have other products than AmigaOS? If yes, how does
AmigaOS fit into this product range?

Kind Regards,
Holger

From: going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

Seems the questions have started to pop up here already, wouldn't want to miss out on the opportunity in case this thing's supposed to go down any day now.

So, here goes:

*****
Who are the people behind KMOS?
What is your past Amiga history?
What's your interest in the Amiga?
*****
Do you see yourself contributing to the effort of bringing AmigaOS out into the public? (Funding marketing, appearances at industry events)
*****
Will we see you make any appearances at any Amiga fairs this year?
*****
Product development aside, what future do you envision for the Amiga System as a computing solution? Today, as well as far into the future?
*****
Will you be pursuiting any type of third party developers to interest them in porting for the Amiga? (scanner drivers, digital camera drivers, home video drivers/software, other software)
*****
Will you be using Amigas at KMOS for everyday business anytime within the near future?
*****
How would you like the Amiga market to grow beyond a (niche) desktop home solution?
*****
Does it seem viable to you to stick with the current Amiga partners (Eyetech, Hyperion) for the foreseeable future?
And how much do you intend to steer the future development of Eyetech/Hyperion?
*****
How sensitive will KMOS be to the community's needs/desires?
Will you or any of your staff monitor the community portals, such as AmigaWorld, or would you consider them irrelevant to your side of the business?
*****
How come no one's heard of KMOS up until now, and that you yet don't have a web presence ready?
*****
Would it be completely out of line to inquire about the financial status of KMOS? (Are you just getting by, are you all set as far as finances go, do you slap some glue on c-notes and use them as post-its)
Not really of any concern to us users, I realize, though it would be reassuring to know that the Amiga platform has a company with enough resources backing it.
*****
Will you take over the coupon/t-shirt obligation from AmigaInc?
*****
Will the responsibility/contents of CAM be placed with KMOS now, or will it remain with AInc as an outlet for DE information? And will the AmigaOS portal remain at os.amiga.com ?
*****

That's all I've got (for now )...a big thanks to AmigaWorld and Mr. Hare for providing the community with this opportunity. Much appreciated!
