Pre-emptive on:

Cue on ANN "isn't aminet enough for everyone".

Like Linux should just use tucows and not have rpmfind

Pre-emptive off.

Good work Orgin, slick too.

Think this is a reall kewl looking iste well done, I specifically like the idea of having a place for OS 4 software seperate from aminet, Looks like you put a good bit of thought into the structure too.

Good luck hope peps use it.

It's very nice - they've done a great job at making it easy to navigate (and I'm sure the back-end is up to scratch as well )

...but was this thought of before AmigaShare? If not, I'm a little worried since we now have two very similar sites doing virtually identical services (and people compained AmigaShare was too similar to AmiNet ). I'm really sorry to have to make a negative comment for what is certainly a well designed site, but I fear this could fragment the "where to get OS4 software" choice even further

Think of it like this, software for OS4 could get uploaded to all three, therefore if one goes tits up you will find it in the others.

Or maybe they will converge, who knows.

Imagine if AmiNet only had one site

Yes, AmigaShare appears to be down right this very minute

Very nice work. Clean & easy to use. I'm really enjoying things like this at the moment.

@DaveP

Hmm... Is anyone game to write a little script that automatically submits to all three? AmigaShare can cope with links, so the files would "only" need to be submitted twice. Of course, they'd only stay in sync if everyone uploaded through that script - maybe a simple frontend could be written that does a search, strips out duplicates and displays the results? One problem could be that there are some features that only AS offers (eg developer features and they're working on a Zero Install feature IIRC) and I'm sure that OS4 Depot will also have some of its own.

@eMike

Stupid hosts by the looks of it (I've had my fair share of similar problems ). I believe that the AmigaShare team are currently organising a more robust solution.

@alx:

I think you're overreacting a bit. All the sites have to do is link to each other, and the "fragmentation" will be kept to a minimum. Also, like Dave just said, consider the current scheme a redundant system

One other way of looking at it is in terms of scope. AmigaShare's stated purpose is to be an inclusive source for all Amiga-like OSs - OS3.x, OS4, MOS and AROS. OS4Depot seems by its name to be an exclusive source for OS4-specific software. What I would do is first look at OS4Depot for something (knowing that whatever I find there will be optimized for OS4), then if I can't find it there, look at AmigaShare - that might have what I'm looking for, maybe in 68K form, or via some form of MOS/OS4 compatibility lib (I expect mosemul.library and os4emul.library to appear fairly soon )

Nice and simple. I like it.

Now all you lucky people who have your CD's already get coding, porting and uploading.

Re Amigashare. "Contact Your Hosting Provider URGENTLY! "

Hmm looks like a glitch. Hopefully a temporary issue.

@Alx

I don't think OS4 Depot and AmigaShare have any conflict of interest. AmigaShare is geared more towards encouraging developers and also provides a modern repository for Amiga software.

OS4Depot on the other hand just provides a convenient download upload place for OS4 specific files.

AFAIK Amigashare doesn't need to host all the files it references. It also provides links to other sites so the both of them can work in parallel.

Wow, that's looking mighty impressive!! Very much an up-to-date, looking and functionality-wise, Aminet...

Awesome!

@eMike

Yes the AmigaShare site is unfortunatly down, I have little to say about the service provided buy our host. We are currently setting up our own dedicated server which we will be moving too within the next few days, this means we have full control and wont have problems like this again.

If all goes well, it should be back up within a few hours, mind you it should have been back up last night.

One point I?d just like to make, as I don?t think we have made it quite clear. AmigaShare supports foremost AmigaOS4! All services that we are providing, this included The Sponsorship Program, The Authoring System, Development Library, etc, are all OS4 Only services. Even our Software library is aimed firstly at OS4 software; we have included support for additional platforms as a secondary selection.

We will not accept MorphOS or AROS only software, it must at least work on an AmigaOS before being excepted. Also the reason we support legacy AmigaOS platforms it that some of the legacy software runs fine emulated on AmigaOS4.

I had a nice long chat with DaveyD, I think it was on Monday, about OS4Depot we both see that there shouldn?t be a conflict of interest between our sites. However I wouldn?t want to see software upload to only one of the sites. So a script to upload to all three sites may be useful. Perhaps AmigaShare can provide this, as I think we capture more data about the App.

Absolutely. No conflicts of interest. If it all works together, we will be bigger.

Very, very nice site. When I eventually buy my A1 with AOS4, I'll be looking there quite often.

Thanks for the comments people :)

Nice to see that there's no flaming about trying to replace aminet or whatnot (There's no way anyone can replace aminet anyway :). OS4Depot is simply focused on AmigaOS4 PPC software related resources with a fast end easy interface to find what one is looking for.

For the future we're looking into mirroring and there will atleast be one mirror up soon, plus a way to upload larger files if needed. There will also be some better search methods when there's more software up on the site and a possibility to download via FTP.

Happy uploading and downloading!

And please contact me by PM if there's any problems or if you have any suggestions.

/Björn
