Software News : Amiga Spectrum Emulator (ASp) new release. |
posted by Laser on 28-Jul-2004 11:52:49 (2152 reads) |
After a two-year wait, the new version 0.84 of ASp is now available from The author's homepage
ASp is a freeware system-friendly emulator of the Sinclair Spectrum 48K, 128K and Plus 2 computers. It is easy to use and can run full-screen or in a window.
Key new features for this release is the use of AHI for sound and (limited) operation without mmu.library. This means it now works, in 48K mode only, on OS4, UAE and (probably) MOS. Classic 68K-based Amigas get full 128K features.
It is hoped the next release will offer 128K for OS4/UAE/MOS. |

| Nice, the 48K emulation runs well under OS4.
Thanks,

| Fantastic. Can't wait for the 128K emulation to be re-implemented.
One thing though, I've only tested it briefly but it is still occasionally complaining about not being able to allocate audio channels (when starting, stopping or resetting the emulation AFAICT), although the sound works fine.
The ARexx scripts don't work either, but I think that's a bug in OS4 as they aren't working in anything.

| Excellent, eexxcellent (Dr. Zoidberg style)
I have been into this emulator for a while & am glad it runs nicely on OS4.
Thanks for the hard work.

| Toaks,
The Speccy provided my childhood gaming experiance. Without it my computing history may have been VERY different. If you would like to check out some games, head to http://www.worldofspectrum.org & I recommend the following (Some are 128k but there's a few 48k games that can be played now). I'm sure I don't have to tell you it's all about game play
ATF, Bomb Jack, Cabal, Carrier Command (I thought this was better than the Amiga version in it's time), Chase HQ (Best conversion IMO, 128k includes samples, LOL), Cybernoid (Oh yeah! I thought Cybernoid 1 'felt' more solid that Cyber 2), Cyclone, DrDestructo, Emlyn Hughes Soccer (Really, the speccy version was crackin!), Exploding Fist, H.A.T.E, Hot Shot, (Ivan) Iron Man Off Road, Mad Mix, Muncher, Myth (Again, better than the Amiga version I thought), New Zealand Story, Ninja Scooter Simulator (About 3 million levels that repeat. I remember playing it for HOURS & HOURS & my mate sitting there just watching, madness), Percy the Potty Pigeon, Plotting (Very good conversion), R-Type (Truly an AMAZING conversion), Rex (Awesome explosions & a superb addictive quality), Robocop (Better than the arcade), Run the Gaultlet (The buggy levels were the best), Spin Dizzy, Star Raiders 2 (See & play to believe), Target Renegade (Smack, Pow, Bam!) Time Scanner, Xenon (Without a doubt & 128k gives you SO much more) Zynaps (CLASS in a glass!)
I know you know most of these names but they're pretty small files & shouldn't take long to grab from the site.
Hope you enjoy. Ooh, lastly, if you insert a tape remember to do "load dip dip"...:
Press J, "Load" appears The press Alt+P twice. You will see:
Load ""
Press enter & the tape will load. SOME .TAP files still load in spectrum real time. Go & have a coffee

Ah yeah! N.O.M.A.D... That has (Somehow) also reminded me of "One Man & His Droid". That was a crackin piece of game too.
You're right about Myth, I did kinda under sell that in my list. If anyone out there hasn't played Myth on the Speccy, do it now. Spend time on it. I play speccy games like I'm playing a PD game to break up the time. But, if you spend time with Myth you will become hooked.
Hmmm, what else? . . . Skool Daze! Hehe... A dream come true
Ooh, there was a breakout like game only it was an isometric 3D view. In this view you had layers of blocks too, if you popped a block the stack of blocks would fall. Your bat was on the right of the screen & the blocks on the left. It came on a cover tape (Either Crash or Your Sinclair) but I cannot remember which one or what it was called. Does anyone remember?
FuZion.
PS. At the risk of becoming less popular, JetSetWilly didn't do it for me. I always thought there were too many of those types of games & they all felt the same. |

Ahhh Myth, Myth, Myth. need I say more ?
The only Breakout game I remember as a Covertape, was the Elite game 'Batty !' which they did as a Spesh for YS May'87 I think, but it wasnt Iso, and the bat was at the bottom of the screen. way better than the commercial offering from USGold (IIRC) which I cant remember the name of (Arkanoid ?).
never got into skool Daze, but was popular with a few mates. (sequel - Bak 2 Skool ?)
and JSW was the original and best, only bettered by JSW2 and Dynamite Dan (and DDII which were both bizarre !)
I shall throw this in to the conversation ...
