hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Two new µ-A1's models on the way!
posted by DaveyD on 28-Aug-2004 16:24:23 (15652 reads)
µ-A1 scheduled for release 1st October 2004.

When we first showed pictures of the µ-A1 last October it was of the first of a series of pre-production versions. Each successive version made was designed to make sure that the final specification of the pre-production product suited the needs of both Amigians and, particularly, large volume industrial customers. We used the pre-production prototypes to gain feedback from a range of such potential customers to ensure that the specification and reliability of the µ-A1 met or exceeded their needs and therefore would ensure the commercial success of the product. That process is now complete.

Looks like I'll have to get my case down out of the loft and look for another case for my nephew, so that's at least 2 sold !
So the A1 will be up stairs and the u-A1 down stairs

Just for the record: the quote price of 100 euro for OS 4 includes VAT and distribution margin.

Only 75 euro will go to the OS 4 developers.

In return, customers will receive newly pressed CD's with the current state of OS 4 as well as the final Amiga OS 4.0 package down the line.

In the meanwhile, you will also be able to access further OS 4 updates through our website.

A quick summary of the good vs bad in the press release (IMHO of course).

The Good

The µA1 is going to be available (at all).

The µA1 is going to be reasonably cheap.

The XC is still being concidered (the model that I'm most interested in. Eyetech, if they become available, please put either a Freescale e600 or an e700 in it ).

The Bad

The A1-XE will still be produced instead of the XC, I do understand that producing it might be hard if the northbridge to drive it isn't available . (And IMO the XE doesn't have much of an advantage in comparison to the µA1)

The Articia S and the old crappy VIA southbridge lives on (It would be nice to move on, but I understand if no other components are available).

The ATI 7000 GFX. Apparently (according to apple zealots moaning about the rumored specs of the uppcomming iMac) the nVidia 5200 GFX chip costs about 16$(US ) in quanteties of 1000, now I'd think a comparible cool running chip like the ATI 9200se wouldn't cost more.

Summary

The two biggest obstacles for Amiga in building a market has been twofold, the hardware is expensive and the OS doesn't have much modern software written for it (yet).

The µA1 clearly solves one pice of the pussle, and one important pice at that. The specs are acceptable for mundane tasks and, propably, any challange that the current Amiga software could throw at it.

@ Hyperionmp
Hi Ben,If you have both and A1 and a Micro A1 would you need two accounts to download any updates from Hyperion's web site?

Andy

(edit) Disregard that, It would just be registered as another piece of Software on the Account. DOH!!!

Two models? Very good!!!
The boards are not as cheap as I thougt (VAT I hate taxes) but at least are cheaper than AOneXE. Oh, and onboard sound and memory are OK!

Apparently the 100 euros does not include VAT but regardless, only 75 euro goes to the OS 4 team.

The rest is apparently going to dealers.

Hi All,

Excellent news! Well done, Eyetech! One question though.... The pricing looks great to me, but why is it $100 more USD than Euros? Last I saw the two were (approximately) $1USD == $1Euro. Is it a whopping export tax of some sort? Thanks! May have to pick up a uA1 now to put alongside my A1G4Xe.

In principle there should just be a single update for all AmigaOne hardware.

You've already got a sale here .

PS: Cool the 750GX is to be used (albeit in the I version).

Well done Eyetech!

People... I have been waiting for this since Amiga Format Issue no. 43, back in 1993 when the mockup A1400 was "unveiled"... This ain't no mock-up, a long wait has come to fruition!

People... those who you involved in the official scene (and you all know who you are), thank you very, very much.

THE AMIGA IS DEAD! LONG LIVE THE AMIGA!

There is a long tradition among Amiga users that they frequently own more than one Amiga. It is also true that the collectors try to get one of each model. I think I will become a collector and in the tradition, get one of each!

Two new little A1s for me.

@Bodie Bros
Now you two don't have to fight over the A1 anymore

Have you placed an order yet?

THIS IS GREAT NEWS!!!

Project: Reality has been awaiting this announcement so that we can move forward ourselves knowing what to expect in the latest MicroA1 revision and how it will incorporate with what we're doing. Hombre has been really at it in the design phase of the project.

We plan to do some market research (so-to-speak) and will provide a questionnaire (multiple choice) for Amigans to fill out on things they would like to see in an Amiga Fantasy (not the product name though) system. We'll keep everyone posted on this.

I cannot remember what it is you are talking about here. I think I heard it but I forgot. Can you explain it again?
