Software News   Software News : New AmigaOne 2.4.26 Linux kernel
posted by rossv on 9-Oct-2004 16:46:15 (4907 reads)
A build of a 2.4.26 kernel for the AmigaOne has been uploaded to:

http://amigaone-linux.sf.net

The usual modules, and config file are also provided. The build configuration is the same as previously, but two modules for USB PDAs have also been added (ipaq and visor).

The main feature of interest is that it has an Si680 driver included, as well as a coherency patch for the IDE (also known as the 'Bill Mueller patch').

Additionally, there are other improvements over the previous kernel versions.

NOTE: If you are using a Si680 card, you must add "ide=reverse" to your kernel commandline, that is, add it to the U-Boot 'bootargs' Env Variable.

This will cause your Si680 controller to appear as hda/b/c/d instead of hde/f/g/h, and provide a seamless change to the Si680 controller.

I`m using the kernel on my A1 now, still with the VIA atm till my Si680 turns up.

One downside is that no floppy support is inc , but not really a big loss.

DMA `should` work reliably i`m told with the SI680.

I beleive the ide=nodma isn`t supported by the SI680 driver so it will automatically go onto dma.

Score - cheers!

Any chance you might upload the sources with patches, too, for those who want to compile their own?

I'm amazed I could still figure out how to do the upgrade, it's been a while since I booted logged into Linux on a regular basis. Maybe now I'll have an incentive to do it more often..

So, thanks a bunch! Good to see that Linux isn't neglected now that OS4 is getting all the buzz.

Coherency patch for the onboard IDE? or is that still in the works while Hyperion work on their VIA initialisation or whatever?

I'll get the floppy to work at a later point, ran out of time unfortunately.

Regarding ide=nodma - that's right, the Si680 driver does not pay attention to that command line argument.

Regards,

Ross..

@PowerAmiga:

The kernel has nothing to do with the distribution, so yes.

Wow, does this mean I can get working DMA both for Linux and AmigaOS?

I really want to switch to the new IDE controller now, but I guess I won't be able to install the OS4 update then (I'm assuming I will need to boot AmigaOS in order to install the update?).

Anyway, good work, Ross!

Oh, stupid (?) question: Does the installation iso contain the new kernel so that it would be possible to install from/to a SiI controller?

Ciao, Alfred
