On the classic Amigas, Bars&Pipes was the kind of application that is worth buying the computer for. I did a fair bit of tool writing on the classic B&P, and look forward to doing whatever it takes to get it running on OS4.
I know I'm not the only programmer who wants to do the port.
I have the tools, documents, and a few versions of the source code standing at the ready.
Bring it on..

Hats off to Todor and Alfred for their selfless contributions.

Sorry, I submitted twice..

I guess some are more submissive than others.

Bars'n'Pipes was the reason MS bought BlueribbonFactory years ago and did let die this great prog! Luckily the programmers did make the program publically available, before the software killer from Redmond arrived.

What we really need is a native OS4 camd.library and appropriate MIDI drivers for the AmigaOne hardware and a couple of sound cards. AFAIK the camd.library is still being worked.

As I recall, Microsoft aquired rights to all of Blue Ribbons works and decided to release Bars at that time. I was part of a small group of programmers that tried to keep the program current.
As I recall, the primary programmer at Blue Ribbon, Todor Fay, was hired by MS to work on the DirectMusic portion of DirectX. I recall that some of the work resembled the "SuperJam" program from the Amiga.

Since BlueRibbon was bought by Microsoft, most of the program updates and continued work has been done by Alfred Faust, including a MOS port.

I spoke with Alfred by E-Mail a few months back when I ordered my XE, and he was quite happy to hear that there is interest in porting this to OS4.

Of course CAMD is required first.. and if it's not yet ready by the time I get an XE I'll be volunteering my time.

Waiting as patiently as I can for my XE to arrive...

Its amazing what google can find you. I wondered what had happened to Todor Fay - after all, I don't remember there ever being any decent Microsoft music software. A bit of diggging revealed this:

"Todor J. Fay ... drove the vision and design of DirectMusic at Microsoft and ultimately managed DirectX Audio API development... After leaving Microsoft, Todor co-founded NewBlue Inc., an interactive technologies developer and consultancy."

Thanks, but I'll have to wait.
I've only got about 26 posts to AW.net, and unfortunately
20 of them are probably me bitching about having to wait
for my motherboard to arrive.

I need to learn patience, and I need to apologize to all the
others here for all the whining I've been doing.

Ifr my dealer gets one he wants to sell me, great. Otherwise
I'll wait patiently until the next big box model comes out.

Fortunately, I've got a good deal of MIDI programming experience,
and I'll eventually get a chance to contribute to the community.
Until then, I'll try to whine less.. Sorry Folks!

Fantastic! I'm sure DaveAE will be interested in chatting with you in the near future.

You might want to reconsider the XE and go for a Micro-A1-C if you don't want to continue waiting. I know it isn't the same thing but the Micro-A1-C is a next gen. board (i.e. based on XE chips with all known bugs fixed) and will be available in higher volumes so you have a much better chance of getting one.

I suspect there will be a few XE boards on the used market in the coming months for those who must have one. I know I'm already thinking of selling mine and I haven't even received the Micro yet.

Yup, I kinda gave him a "hello" back when I ordered my board. I'll not bother him again until I'm ready to offer more than a greeting.

As far as which A1 to go with, I would really prefer an XE. I've alredy built the case up and have all the parts ready to go. Yes, I could probably stuff a micro board in, but then what would I do with the Radeon 9200 board?

The future may change, but for now I'm holding out for the board I ordered, whether or not it has a few bugs in it.

I just found out I'll be admitted for surgery in the first week of December. After a few days in the hospital I'll have at least two full weeks to lay around the house with nothing to do.... Gee, I wonder how much coding I could get done with two weeks of completely free time on my hands?

Waiting as patiently as I can,
LyleHaze
