Software News   Software News : OS4 Aqua X Theme Released
posted by Toaks on 26-Nov-2004 13:44:25 (5431 reads)
This skin has carefully been created to make OS4 look as good as possible and at the same time consistent enough to make it last for more than a day before you get sick of it.

The Theme includes all from buttons to backdrops (Various) and its an
attempt to make a full package for all your needs.

The archive is huge (over 7mb).

There is no Mui Stuff included in this package but it might be released if the interest is big enough.

The Skin is downloadable from: OS4 Depot

Screenshot of the Theme in action Is Located Here

Now go have some fun and remeber to read the readme before installing!.

Very cool!

I don't have OS4, but that didn't stop me from having a look -- lots of nice wallpaper images and "slick" gadget images (hmmm . . . I wonder if they could be adapted to VisualPrefs?)

Some of those icons are EXACTLY the same as the OSX ones, I hope all of this is legal..

I don't understand where to copy the files?
If I use SYS: my prefs directory seems to get overwritten?

Where's the exact place to copy which files and dirs.

THX a lot.

only the prefs files will be over written, the rest stays intact.

unpack the archive and see where all files go.

anyway this is the route:

( System40:Prefs/Presets/Default/Common/Bitmaps/ )

place the aquaX dir here.

then go into prefs/gui and do as the readme on os4depo describes.

good luck

(as for the prefs files, if you dont want to overwrite then ure stuck with a half way skin...)

Hi Toaks,

I've just had a look at your AquaX theme archive and have a few rather important suggestions. Normally I would have replied privately, but I think this is probably a good time to provide some information that might be useful to others thinking of creating similar theme packages.

I know there are no official guidelines on these matters at the moment. I think that is something we will need to sort out.

Quote:

Never overwrite someones prefs files without asking. With the archive organised as it is, anyone unpacking it directly to their boot partition will not be very impressed when the prefs they worked on for ages are lost. Having anything written to (or arranged so that it would be written to) Env-Archive is a big no-no.

Instead, place these seperate prefs files in another location, preferably under a subdirectory that makes it clear that they are part of your theme. If the user wants to try these, then they just need to load them in the seperate prefs editor programs and click use. Alternatively, the icon created when using the "save as" option from these prefs editors will provide the user a way to choose these settings easily. If the user is happy with the result, then they can save them manually. If, for some reason, they don't work, then the user wont be left with a broken OS4 install when they next reboot.

(I also notice that you have .info files for sys and prefs, which could end up overwriting someones own icons. If the user doesn't have PowerIcons installed, then this would even stop them being able to access their prefs directory!)

Quote:

Please don't put files in there! That entire 'Default' directory, and children, is the OS4 default presets. You shouldn't mix in files from completely seperate set of presets.

Instead, your top-level directory should have been at Sys:Prefs/Presets/Toaks/AquaX, for example. Whatever directories and files you decide to place below this level is then entirely up to you. So you might want to have a backdrops directory, and bitmaps directory, etc. You could place the .prefs files in this top-level directory, with their icons. Or you could have seperate sub-directories for the same theme at different sizes, etc.

If anyone else would like me to look over and check the structure of their theme before releasing it, I'm happy to do so. Just send me a PM.

mattK:

I know....i know...

but the users cant change the paths now and i wont re upload a new archive as i have better things to do...

i might reconsider that as soon as i see a new Gui + that non betatesters have access to the same version i use and this is why everything was set as it is (just to make sure).

thanx for your feedback.

cheers

mattk: btw..take a look again!

You will then notice that the structure of the archive is infact sys/prefs/...... and not prefs/.... hence a user wont overwrite directly when unarching but it would require a manual copy/move after.

anyway i still get your point but there is no problems regarding it or?

As for the info files...thats my mistake indeed as i dont list icons (#?.info) in dopus and that was created by a mistake... no one's perfect it seems.

@eMike

I don't see how. KDE.org is full of OS-X icon packages, WinCustomize also has many OS-X icon packages, and noone has ever kicked because of them, so I fail to see how this is an issue for you.

Hey Toaks! Nice theme! I am using it right now.
My A1 wouldn't boot after the first install, as I didn't boot off the CD, silly me! But when I booted off the CD and recopied everything it works.
However, all buttons that aren't used at the top window bar looks very out of place, they have wrong colours around them, instead of just nagging, I have edited them to fit in with the rest of the theme, if you want them, mail me on spotATtriadDOTse and I will send them to you! I just registered MUI too, so now I will be avlble to change some other small things that bothers me and then everything will be perfect. :)

Lo Spotty...

well youre the first to report this and its over 24 hours and xGB away....

what the hell did you do to your system dood ?

and no i dont want your hacked skin but thanx anyway .

Seems some of the files aint working as it should on your sys so if i where you i would have tried some more before changing the theme but then again i would have done the same myself i guess (instead of bickering on a forum...).

Cheers

The reason my A1 didn't boot must have been due the fact that some of my files where in use and didn't get overwritten by your theme files.. but as i said, everything was fine once I recopied the theme to sys:....
and no, i didn't care so much about my GUI settings, as they where kinda defaultish. :) But, hey you should have a look at a screenie from my 'hacked' theme, you might like it. :) only removed some unwanted pixels from 6-8 buttons. :) No offence man!

EDIT: oh crap. lots of spelling and grammar errors here..

spotty:

Just to have it said, im not the creator of the theme.

Im Just the helper and the things i made aint included here at all and thats the mui skins and a few other things.

anyway upload yer screenshot ofcourse, should be interesting to hear what the authors has to say .

(ps:it was released as is due to the fact that Gui aint done and its not like it should be in the final version where you can resize the gadgets/build the structure on the size of the gadget etc....and it was uploaded as its been in this state for a long time + people where asking alot per email/irc/forums for the skin.)

anyway thanx for letting the world know.

Yes, I know. I was merely addressing eMike's point of the OS-X icons per se. In any case, all this is OT (and yes, I mean your point eMike), so let's continue this thread unabated. The argument over the "icons" is a non-entity in this news article, consider it as ended here. People, enjoy this new theme.

I was thinking more about all the people who might want to install this now and in the future. The people who have already installed it are already damned.

In theory, since the GUI prefs are in IFF format, it shouldn't matter. New features/options added in future versions of the prefs editor should simply be ignored by older versions. Again, in theory.

There's plenty more new features in the pipeline, so waiting until they are all done might not be the best approach.
