Announcement   Announcement : Scalos news update
   posted by Restore2003 on 2-Feb-2005 11:53:51 (5377 reads)
Taken From the Scalos homepage:

Quote:
Scalos is NOT dead! Indeed, lots of changes have have been done under the hood. An entirely CVS-based source repository and build system has been setup, all ASM code in Scalos core components has been replaced by C code, and many code modifications have been done to allow building with GCC, as a preparation for future OS4 or MorphOS versions.

So it seems AmigaOS4 users will be able to choose between the default Workbench, Scalos as well as Directory Opus Magellan environments in the future!

This flexible modularity is something I really love about AmigaOS. It provides the possibility of real competition and user choice. For example several different movie players, internet webbrowsers, email clients are easily completely removed and exchanged with 3rd party alternatives, unlike with some monopolistic commercial mainstream offerings.

The team originally behind it was "ALiENDESiGN"; this looks like their website, but there's no mention of any games on there.

I can't remember what they were involved with, and Google isn't being particularly helpful today...

Well, am I the only one who read this and is thinking that nobody has announced an OS4 version of Scalos? There is only the mention of code modification to allow building with GCC, for future OS4 or MorphOS versions, but I don't see where it is announced that Scalos for OS4 is in progress.

@Herewegoagain

Yeah, but ScalOS is pretty cool, and having more choice is always good (albeit at some unspecified time in the future!) - and everyone else is too polite to piss on someone else's parade

@ Toaks

Yes that was 'Satanic Dreams Software'. In 1999 they announced a game called 'Minimum Safe Distance' which was being described as a "Worms in Real-Time" clone.

That's right, Alien Design took over development in 1999.

Maybe people will mix up Guru Meditation and GPSoftware in the future as well.

Mix ups between the various Amiga IP owners regarding past events happen pretty often, although sometimes I do get the impression this is done intentionally.

Cool! I have good memories of Scalos, it will have some fierce competition in OS4 for sure. But like you say, the freedom of choice is a good thing indeed.

I'd also like an OS4 version of SysSpeed..

@Herewegoagain

Well, you are not. I don't fancy any of the sides but some reliable and honest information would be more appreciated than confusing one, especially here, on AW.net. The submitted news is month old (Scalos Team wrote it on 3rd of Januray 2005) and three days ago they put on their page something like that:

Quote:
The Scalos development team finally has received an ODW donation from Genesi in order to support development of a native MorphOS version. Porting already has started, and we are making good progress.

As far as it goes for me, it is far away from the topic of "Scalos for OS4 in progress". I wish Scalos would be available for AmigaOS 4.0 but submitting not true information is very, very not right.

@ mailman

Restore2003 probably submitted this news item due to amiga-news.de reporting this as news. The person modding this up as frontpage news probably did so because this information was new to him.

Anyway IMO it's very positive that the Scalos team mentioned an AmigaOS4 port and that it is still under active (30-01-2005) development. And therefore I personally thought this story to be newsworthy enough to remain here.

mailman:so where does it say that this is not news and where does it say that OS4 version is abandoned? .

if scalos all of a sudden becomes mos only then they will write that on the website and then this item will be edited or a new newsitem will cover that.

oh and btw, THIS IS NEWS to me i didnt know this before today as no one bothered (including YOU!) to post this as news 1 month ago when it was put on the website.

I think that is the point... Where does it say that there is an OS4 version in progress? If there is, then that's all well and good, but I don't see that announcement anywhere on the site. To me it sounds more like they just said that the code was being written in such a way that it could be compiled for OS4 or MOS, but that is a far cry from saying that an OS4 version is in progress. Granted, the word "preparation for" sounds as if it will be available at some point for OS4, but without a definite word that this is the case, we are simply posting speculations.

edited for spelling errors... I hope I got them all...

Herewegoagain exactly understood what I mean. It is no bad that 1 month old information appeared. It should be here because it is quite important and gives some hopes. Unfortunatelly it doesn't say whever OS4 version is or isn't in progress. But the news strictly says that IT IS. And that is my point.
