Software News   Software News : MIDI out driver for onboard gameport
   posted by DaveAE on 24-Apr-2005 14:44:24 (3815 reads)
I've submitted my first attempt at a CAMD MIDI driver for the onboard gameport (VIA686). As on the Pegasos, only MIDI out works, since I don't get any IRQ's from the device for MIDI input. Please use together with the OS4 native CAMD archive.

If you wanna have a go at enabling MIDI in, source is included.

Kind regards,

Davy Wentzler

@DaveAE

Do you want me to set the distribute flag for camd.lha to "no" as well?

@DaveAE

Setting it to "yes" means that the archive can be distributed on other media, such as a Magazine cover CD.

You selected "no" for camd_via686.lha.

Oh, you can put it on yes, but don't put it on Aminet.

Which models have this onboard port?

Ok, latest version (work in progress) is here:
http://www.audio-evolution.com/stuff/via686_1.1.lha

which might perform slightly better.

Hi Dave:

I tested the first version from os4 depot and it did
my a1g4xe to lockup. Only coldreboot possible.

So i tested the via 1.1 and i could use it.
Ofcourse only midi out worked as you say.
So i quit hdrec and rerun it and hdrec locked
up on splash screen after setting up cpu measure.
After that the midi initialisation or whatever the
text is should come but not. So it seems like the
via maybe doesnt shut off when hdrec is shut off and
when restarting hdrec it just locks up.

Ofcourse after a cold reboot it works again.
Only after quitting and rerun of hdrec i do get
a lockup.

Nice too see that the gameport is usable :)

A question.. Or rather two!
Why does only MIDI Out work? Does VIA686B not support MIDI In?

Just a silly question:

is this driver for micro A1 or for every A1 ?

Cheers,

Luca

@Kicko

Yes, I noticed this last night. I know where the problem is and I'll try to fix it tonight. Thanks for testing!

@Samwel

We don't get any MIDI interrupts, that's the reason why MIDI in doesn't work (yet). I'll try some more, but it doesn't look good.

@Luca

Both mA1 and A1 since both gameports are connected to the VIA686B. (The CMI was added later).

@DaveAE

I've downloaded it and intalled it on my A1. I started up Horny and it saw the interface. When I get home from work I'll hook up the cable and try it out. I'll also try sending MIDI out both the soundblaster and the onboard gameports simultaneously. I'll let you know how it goes.

I have an SE, I couldn't see anything about midi in the board docs. But I think the sound card (SB Live) has one?

If the SE has a gameport (the orange/yellow thing), then that will act as MIDI port with the right cable/interface.

The sound card has this port, I could try it some day perhaps. If I get some MIDI device...
