Software News   Software News : New Distributed.Net clients available
   posted by DWolfman on 18-May-2005 0:06:43 (3336 reads)
According to an email I received on the Distributed Amiga Team maillist, new clients have just been put up in the pre-release area on Distributed.Net's servers. There are quite a few new ones, with an assortment of fixes and new features for various platforms. This includes all AmigaOS versions (68K for 3.9 and older, all the PPC flavors, and OS4).

You can find them here.

What is this all about? I don't know anything about it. What this software does?

@walkero

Very Short: Nothing!

Short: It adds CPU-load to your system (that's what Windows has built in!)

Seriously: Check the link!

@Raziel

I'm at work now, so can't check the email I received. Oliver mentioned that there were some minor fixes that are included in it from the main source tree (not platform specific) as well as the new items listed for "all" in your quoted changelog above. If he doesn't post a comment here before I get home tonight, I'll look at it and add another comment on it.

If he implemented what I asked the client will now write its buffer to disk when OS4 is soft/hard reseted.

Well, the only thing mentioned was "no specific improvents" for the AmigaOS ones, mainly some speed improvements for the x86 clients. But there were a few other things listed in general for the clients in the release notes so it's always a good thing to update even if it doesn't have an impact on crunching rates.

The observant amongst you might notice a new menu item allowing the console display(s) to be cleared That is the only change in the AmigaOS clients of note really. Of course, the OS4 version also benefits from a rebuild with the latest GCC 3.4.3 and clib2. There have been various other minor fixes for all platforms which are not mentioned in the changes file.

I've not really had the chance to finalize those changes, due to the reset handlers not working reliably on my BPPC. I've had mixed results with handler code, including crashes. Anyway, things changed in the past week or so in regards to the reset handlers on classic, so I'll give it another try when I get time (read: busy developing IBrowse 2.4 at the moment).

Besides, everybody should disable checkpointing which prevents losing more than 5 minutes of work. Obviously, if you get a hard crash, there is no way a reset handler can save your work before resetting

Don't forget to check that the new client is using the fastest core, I've not had any luck with the automatic core-selection, neither with LinuxPPC or OS4.

Are you referring to OGR, RC5-72 or both? Can you tell me what "dnetc -cpuinfo" says on your system? I'll see if the auto core selection can be tweaked.
