There's an erron in the installer:

Delete that colon at the end of the SetEnv line

It's not the first time Java has run on the Amiga. I updated the AmigaOS port of Kaffe back in 2002. The 68k binary and all sources are available on www.kaffe.org. The 68k version has an interpreter and JIT, but is now rather out of date.
Once I get clear of OS4 development, I shall make a PPC port of Kaffe for OS4. There is already a PPC Linux version, it just needs the OS4 trimmings.
I don't want to knock Peter's work, but he has a long way to go to catch up with Kaffe, which is now (mainly) JDK 1.4 compatible.
