Software News   Software News : Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 released
posted by tomazkid on 6-Jun-2005 23:56:57 (3601 reads)
The Debian GNU/Linux version 3.1 codenamed ``sarge'' is now officially released.

Read release notes here

Whether this makes it onto the AmigaONE or not is anyones guess, but it would be nice!

Debian Woody was for over a year a mainstay on the early adopter systems as *the* linux, Debian is known for its reliability, security and excellent remote admin capabilities so if any Linux should survive on the current batch of Amigas, it should probably be this one.

not read the press release thoroughly yet, but ...
what is the recommended / minimum Kernel version this requires ?

ie: will it work on 2.4.26, which I believe is the most recent one on the AmigaOne.

Also, is it available on CD yet ?

-edit- ahh its 2.4.27 or 2.6.8 for the Kernel, and on CD soon.
just answered me own questions !

Hi,

Yes!

Yeh, but they might not be A1 compatible. I don't know...

I've been running the last month in Debian 3.1 Sarge "Testing". The 14 CDs set
were from RevancheLLC.com

I'm definately NOT an Linux expert, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. A lot of people have been using Sarge (as "testing" or "unstable") on their AmigaOne's for quite a while.

For those interested in upgrading from Woody to Sarge, try the following link:

The installers are only for the officially supported hardware, the AmigaOne is sadly not amongst those...

:)

->"...officially supported hardware..." Umm, what/who does that actually mean?

I always thought Apple was always the PPC reference.

Anyone is trying to develop a boot cd for Sarge that can take the place of the old Ross Vumbaca's one (Woody) ?

If you already have a working version of Debian Woody on your A1, can't you just use 'aptitude' to upgrade?

Of course
Sarge works just fine with the A1.

As allready mentioned, a dist-upgrade will do.

The release notes recommend 'aptitude'. It is supposed to make better decisions regarding upgrading packages.
