Events   Events : AmiGBG 2005 report & Global Amiga celebrations
   posted by MikeB on 28-Jul-2005 13:39:05 (9589 reads)
I have finished my AmiGBG 2005 fair and celebrations report.

"Last Saturday on the 23rd of July Amigans worldwide celebrated the 20th birthday of the Amiga platform at several events and gatherings. It was the 23rd of July 1985 when the Amiga 1000 was unveiled to the public at the Lincoln Center in New York. At the three biggest Amiga birthday events there were also extensive AmigaOS4 presentations"

Great report MikeB!!!

It seems that things are really going foward. Who knows, maybe i'll buy an AmigaONE one of these days. That's for sure. Maybe this year.

It is sad that the local dealer here in Lisbon Centro Amiga doesn't have his AmigaONE turned on in the store showing some stuff for the people that enter the shop, so i could pay a visit and play a bit with OS4. He did had the AmigaONE connected once with a very early OS4 version running. I tried some stuff but it was so badly configured that most of the applications and games i was trying to run crashed almost instantly! Anyone from around here reading this, or even people from abroad might want to give him a call, contact him or even show up at his store and MAKE HIM put the AmigaONE on display so people could think twice before choosing a new system to play with. Those that are willing to do that, his contacts are here. One thing you'll notice is that his website is very outdated. Once i tried to help him updating the site but he never mentioned anything to me again so i gave up trying to help him with the Amiga part of the site and 'hired' someone else to do it. Well, visit the site and see the result. Anyway, that contacts are the same, so there should be no problems in contacting him. Since i'm pretty close to his shop, if he's there and not on vacation, one of these days i'll drop by and try to convince him to put some Amiga stuff on display again. Any fellow Portuguese Amigans out there reading this, once again, make him see that truth are lure him away from the 'dark side' and return to the 'force' again.

Once again, thanks for the report MikeB. Very well done! One more thing... great suit! I have one that looks almost like your, only it's black with a red tie.

P.S.: how about a forum or topic so that people around the world could send in information about their local Amiga dealers/shops around their country? Something like Amiga Format's Shopwatch!?

Are they an official AmigaOne dealer? (At least they are not on our A1 dealer list, probably like a few others without proper web info)

@MikeB

As far as i know, i don't think so. I think they were once, but not anymore. Why i don't know exactly. Shame on them!!!

There was one time i visited the store manager to see how he was doing, since he sometimes has great difficulties in keeping the store going, and i saw his AmigaONE on the floor, disconnected, not doing anything. I asked him: "Hey! Why is the AmigaONE on the floor?" - He said: "I don't have the time or head to keep it running. One of these days i will." - I said: "Why don't you let me try to help and testing it from time to time and showing people the new Amiga/AmigaOS?" - Awnser?: "Another time, perhaps."

Needles to say, i never asked again bacause i trusted him that he would tell me when i could put the AmigaONE 'on display' for people to see, and since then, he never told me anything. He's still an Amiga fan, and still uses his A4000T for some stuff on the store, mainly because of STFax and other things, but not much else. Old software stock, some Amigas to fix wich he ships to Germany (not sure about that) and waits forever, etc, etc...

If only someone could try to talk some scence into him, maybe he could put at least something running on the AmigaONE, maybe, with all the updates available, one or two games or something to show the processing/graphics power of the AmigaONE.

Anyway, i stopped trying, since he's a bit stuborn and i don't want to get into fights or 'explode' with nerves with him, if you know where i'm getting at.

Resuming: i think he's not an AmigaONE dealer anymore. I saw the store listed here in AW once, but at some point, it was gone. I questioned myself why and went there to ask. He could not give me an awnser. If only some one could try 'turning' him back from the 'dark side'...

I won't bother you anymore with this. It's just a shame the the 'older' Amiga dealer here in Portugal is not giving the proper attention (even if it's small) the Amiga deserves from him. It makes me sad. Honestly. Shame on that guy. Anyway, the contacts are there, and as i said, one of these days i'll go there and try for the last time. If he's going to say/react like i think he will, i'll give up. For good.

Sorry again...

@Zontrox,

You shouldn't give up that easy (well not easy but ...). It's up to US to motivate ppl who is giving up on the Amiga.

You can make a differance here! Go do it!

Maybe he thought he would be selling pre-built systems when becoming an AmigaOne dealer? Something like an A1200 or A4000 pre-built and tested by Commodore, instead of having to assemble systems himself..

If he still has an AmigaOne board doing nothing, he would probably be able to sell it at a good price, even as a 2nd hand classifieds ad here on AmigaWorld!

Mike, I've listed some more details on the project.

After this the Frieden brothers stressed that Amiga fans should not hold out for any such hardware, as if everyone does this after the AmigaOS4.0 final release this will hurt the Amiga market significantly.

This is Troika policy. If you wish to buy OS4 and the A1, don't wait for our motherboard. Buy from the next run of systems from Eyetech.

You bet i will. As soon as i have some spare time from work and other things, i will drop him a visit, talk a bit and mention the AmigaONE and we'll see how the conversation goes. Can't promise anything, but be sure that I WILL TRY, no matter what!

@MikeB

Maybe you're right, MikeB. He probably thought that someone would come and pick that AmigaONE with OS4 (without updates or anything, just internet connection enable, and very little software installed) for some cash or something. Honestly, i can't think of a good reason why he did that. Maybe, one of these days, when i drop him a visit, i enter the store and see the AmigaONE connected. Then i'll be a happy man. If not, then i'll have a serious talk with him, if he's not too busy or if i see he doesn't care, i'll push him! If i still don't get a 'decent' and believable response, i'll give up because at that time he probably doesn't care or doesn't have spare time/resources to show the AmigaONE/OS4 at the store to people. I would do it (work and other stuff permitting) if he would let me take care of it, and if that happens, whenever i have problems or difficulties with his AmigaONE/OS4, i'll come here and ask you nice people. If not... well... i don't know. As i said above, i'll talk to him A.S.A.P. and we'll see how it goes. He's probably on vacation but i'll let you know when it happens.
