Software News   Software News : New emu10kx and CMI8738 drivers and new Mixer
   posted by DaveAE on 19-Sep-2005 20:38:31 (10378 reads)
Recently uploaded to OS4depot:

- emu10kx v6.2: This may solve the freezes that people experienced when playing sound together with using ethernet (eth3com). People have transferred several GB of data without a freeze, so it is looking good. An IRQ timer that was set to generate 1000 interrupts per second was changed to 80Hz. It seems that the VIA686B PIC isn't too happy about handling many IRQ's/second.

- CMI8738 v5.12: Can solve some sound crackle issues, especially after Grim Reapers and other situations where only a stop and start of playback could 'solve' the crackling.

- Mixer v1.15: Daniel Westerberg has added extensive ARexx support to Mixer and solved some bugs. Please read the accompanying ARexx.readme for more information.

Kind regards,

Davy Wentzler

I tried the new drivers and at first everything looked (or should that be sounded) good, but now I've noticed that Mono playback is weird. It stutters and sounds really high pitched. (This happens with the test sound in AHI prefs, as well as in programs that output sound in Mono)

I am using the CMI driver on a MicroA1 with the internal sound chip.

IIRC the mono modes are not supported by the CMI driver. You need to pick one of the stereo modes instead.

@BlackNinja

But can you confirm that it does record? I mean, you don't hear it, but it is recorded. I have a ZS too.

@DaveAE

I can confirm. I can record with AhiRecord over LineIn. The taken up file (AIFF) can be played with tone.

Ok, thanks. We'll look at the diffs of the code. Strange thing is that this might also mean it can be supported in Mixer...

We'll look into it. IIRC, there were some big changes some versions ago.

So, anyone experienced freezes yet with this new emu10kx driver or anyone has some clear success stories?

I can confirm BlackNinja's problem with CD audio. I'm using an Audigy2 (oh, and I do have a cable from my DVD-R/W to the analogue CD input on the Audigy ) Btw, the new driver seems to have cured the lockup problem for me too (knock on wood).

no freezes but after running the a1 for some time (30 minutes, one hour, ...) the soundcard only outputs some noise (even if i play nothing).
a reset does not help - i have to cold reboot then to fix it?
afaik this happened also before i installed the new drivers.

byebye...

I thought they used to work (at least as far as outputting the test tone correctly, anyway)

Mplayer is using one of the mono modes automatically (presumably because the video stream is in mono) - is there any way to force it into stereo?

There is absolutely no reason to use a mono mode. You can use a stereo mode and still play mono sounds. AE4 does that all the time.

Ok, took me one minute to support the mono modes, so there you have it.
Will be uploaded some day.

@BlackNinja

Tried 5.16. LineIn didn't work correctly since I fixed a bug after that version. And line in and cd monitoring didn't work at all.

Can't help you I'm afraid.

@DaveAE

That is very sadly too hoeren Only with 5.16 the LineIn and CdPlay without problems function. Unfortunate that the Amiga programming the necessary means subere drivers are missing to develop. Under Linuc PPC my Soundblaster Audigy z2 100% is supported and perfect functioned there. Why is this possible not also under Aos4.0?

It is possible, it's just very hard without documentation. And the linux drivers aren't exactly clear either. Blame Creative, not us!

I did some more testing, without being quite so tired, and I was wrong about mplayer using a mono mode - it isn't.

For some reason any sound output mplayer makes is coming out garbled in pretty much the same way that the test tone is garbled on the current drivers for the mono mode.

Here's what mplayer prints out when starting playback :

Building audio filter chain for 44100Hz/2ch/s16be -> 0Hz/0ch/s8...
AF_FORMAT_S16_BE
AHI: Using 0x350002 AudioID.
AHI: Using 10584 bytes per chunk and 330 Kb for buffer
AO: [ahi] 44100Hz 2ch s16be (2 bps)
Building audio filter chain for 44100Hz/2ch/s16be -> 44100Hz/2ch/s16be...

About all I was able to deduce from that is that it's definitely using a stereo mode.

Mplayer used to output okay before I installed the latest driver/mixer, and all the other apps that make noise that I have work fine (dvplayer, tunenet, simpleplay).

Anybody here have any idea what might be up with it?

UPDATE: I can get sound to work if I set -ao to sdl, so at least I can use mplayer now. Odd that it no longer works on default settings though.
